A reckless romantic, when he was thirteen, the First Bishops' War broke out, and the young nobleman sneaked out of Gordon Castle (one account says he climbed over the wall) and raised a brigade of clansmen from his father's estates in the Highlands in order to fight the Covenanters. He served on both sides in the Scottish Civil War and went into exile in France after the defeat of the royalists. A Continental bronzed metal bust of Ajax, after the Antique, late 19th century, the bearded subject portrayed looking to dexter and wearing a military helmet, mounted to a turned and ebonised wood socle, 32cm high overallCondition Report: The patina is distressed overall, showing areas of a golden hue (possibly remnants of previous gilding) and a coppery orange.The paint to the socle is slightly chipped, and there is an old split of circa 2cm to the rear.Minor casting inconsistencies to the helmet, specifically the rim. Whiplash stems to each side with buds and graduated old Swiss cut and old eight cut diamonds, all milligrain set to a bloomed ground, with three graduated pearl and diamond pendant drops below.
