3rd-6th century AD. A garnet cuboid seal pierced vertically with carved intaglio images to the four lateral faces: a pouncing lion encircled by a beaded serpent and an arrow above; a profile bust with ridged headdress, encircled by a fillet with radiating lines; a left hand with thumb and forefinger touching, the other fingers spread, over a wreath with knotted lower ends, radiating lines above; a facing lion mask with four flowers emerging from the top of the head within a fillet with radiating lines; supplied with a museum-quality impression. 4.39 grams, 13mm (1/2"). From a London, UK, collection; acquired 1970s. Extremely fine condition. Extremely rare.

3rd millennium BC. A sheet silver plaque with repoussé image of a profile bearded male bust with band to the brow; the hair shown in vertical waves with curled ends, the beard similar; lentoid eye and raised eyebrow; beaded lateral borders. Cf. Moortgat, A. The Art of Ancient Mesopotamia, London, 1969, item 16. 23 grams, 16cm (6 1/4"). From the Rizzi family collection; acquired in the 1970s. The execution of the hair, brow-band and beard is similar to those on the gold helmet or headdress from the tomb of Mes-kalam-dug at Ur, conventionally dated to the middle of the 3rd millennium BC. Fair condition.
2nd century BC. A plano-convex discoid seal with portrait profile bust to the flat face, possibly of King Aretas I. 11 grams, 18mm (3/4"). Property of an North American collector; acquired in the 1970s. Aretas I is the first known Nabatean king, whose name appears on the earliest known Nabatean inscription, a 2nd century BC carving from Halutza. [No Reserve] Fine condition.
3rd century BC-5th century AD. A mixed group of glass items and fragments including a bird with applied trail wings and beak, four fragments of clear panel with mosaic inserts, a clear fragment with incised profile bust, a clear fragment with incised fish(?) motif, a black fragment with moulded frond and rib, and others. 35 grams total, 9-37mm (1/4 - 1 1/2"). Property of a lady; acquired in the late 1970s on the London art market. [18] Fair condition.
4th-1st century BC. A mixed group comprising: a red glass cylinder with applied blue discs, intaglio profile bust; a blue glazed composition scarab with re-cut tendril motif; a green glass cabochon with intaglio amphora motif. 20 grams total, 9-21mm (1/4 - 3/4"). Rev: S I C / L / S I C / C in four lines within wreath with SOCIETAS NVMISM LOND ANNOS CONST LI legend and MDCCCLXXXVII date below. BCM 1729; BHM 3344; Forrer IV/549. 1.2 grams, 57mm. The Brodie Hall, Kent, UK collection; acquired Chris Rudd (with ticket). Sir John Evans (1823-1908), eminent numismatist, archaeologist and son of Sir Arthur Evans was president of the Numismatic Society of London (now the Royal Numismatic Society) from 1874 and was awarded their medal in 1887; he was author of The Coins of the Ancient Britons, published 1864 (with Supplement, 1890); also of The Ancient Stone Implements, Weapons and Ornaments of Great Britain, 1872 and 1897 editions and of The Ancient Bronze Implements, Weapons and Ornaments of Great Britain, 1881; all of his works are still of considerable value today. Almost as struck, brown tone.

19th century AD or earlier. Giovanni Cavallo, later(?) cast. Obv: AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG II F CO legend with bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev: no legend, Argos seated right before a building, working on the prow of a ship; before him, Minerva standing left, resting hand on a shield inscribed VIC AVG. See Lawrence, Medals by Giovanni Cavino The Paduan, 58. 33.38 grams. On the original medallion (Cohen II, 400; Gnecchi 65 var), the inscription on the obverse ends with P II F COS II and the shield on the reverse bears a griffin in place of the inscription. Very fine.

Rev: TR P VII IMP IIII COS III P P legend beneath Jupiter seated right upon the seven hills of Rome, receiving the emperor, who holds Victory and is crowned by Virtus.
