Attributed to Friedrich Carl Gröger (German, 1766-1838)Portrait of Field-Marshal Prince Gebhard von Blücher (1742-1819), bust-length, in uniformwith copy inscription 'Gröger pinx 1816' verso (on re-lining), oil on canvas27 x 33cmCondition ReportThe painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has been lined. Although the canvas tension is stiff, the picture has undulations across the surface. At the lower edge a deformation has been caused by debris trapped between the lower stretcher bar and the canvas. The paint layers are stable overall, some age cracks in the sitter’s face are slightly raised but secure. The varnish is glossy and even but is starting to degraded with matte patches occurring following lines of age cracks. There is a light layer of dirt across the surface.
Circle of Samuel Woodforde (1763-1817)Portrait of a lady, bust-length in profile, in a white dressoil on canvas61 x 51cmCondition ReportThe canvas is unlined. There is craquelure throughout and stretcher marks, which has begun to make the surface is a little uneven. There are a few touches of discoloured restoration to the skin tones where there has been an attempt to infill the craquelure, see illustration. Under UV light, the surface is fluorescing however, this appears to be an effect of pooling varnish rather than any further signs of restoration. Generally therefore, the painting is in original condition. It would be fairly straightforward for a restorer to remove the discolouration to the face and re-apply.

The canvas tension is stiff and the picture bows forward slightly. The paint layers have a network of age cracks, some of which are slightly raised and there are a few scattered losses across the surface. The varnish is clear, glossy with a few matte spots across the surface. Areas of overpaint are mainly located in the background.
