A Victorian plaster bust of the Emperor Augustus, second half 19th century, by Brucciani & Co., modelled after the Antique and later repainted to resemble porphyry; the waisted circular socle inscribed 2402 to the front and D.BRUCCIANI & CO LONDON to the reverse 71cm high, 36cm wide CATALOGUE NOTES: Domenico Brucciani was born in Lucca, Italy in 1815. He moved to London where he established a Gallery of Casts in Covent Garden by 1837. This business was one of many which emerged in the 19th century, when the copying of art became a lucrative trade across Europe. Brucciani’s firm, which was one of the most successful, developed links with both the British Museum and the South Kensington Museum (now the Victoria & Albert Museum). Both institutions assembled important collection of casts of sculpture and architecture during this period Brucciani died in 1880, although his business continued into the 20th century
A substantial and impressive bust after the Farnese Hercules, 19th century, the careworn visage turned downwards to sinister, on a waisted, circular socle 98cm high, 64cm wide CATALOGUE NOTES: The Farnese Hercules probably dates to the early third century A.D. and like much Roman sculpture almost certainly copies a much older Greek original that was well-known, in this case probably by Lysippos (or one of his circle) that would have been made in the fourth century B.C. The enlarged Farnese version was made for the Baths of Caracalla in Rome (dedicated in 216 AD), where the statue was recovered in 1546, and is now in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples. The heroically-scaled Hercules is one of the most famous sculptures of antiquity, and has fixed the image of the mythic hero in the European imagination Please note, this bust is of moulded plaster, painted white overall.
