A George III red japanned and gilt decorated table clock by John Taylor of London, the 8ins arched brass dial with silvered chapter ring with Roman and Arabic numerals and strike/silent dial to arch to the eight day three train movement with verge escapement, striking and quarter chiming on nine bells, with engraved backplate, contained in japanned case with inverted bell shaped top, gilt brass bust and urn finials to top, gilt brass floral mounts to the cant corners and with cast side panels of leaf scroll form, 21.5ins high (case re-japanned at later date) Note : Possibly John Taylor, recorded working Gloucester Street, London, circa 1780 Provenance : Sir Philip and Lady Haldin, formerly of Lympne Place, Lympne, Hythe, Kent and thence by family descent

Tolstoy writes a sincere and heartfelt letter, explaining his miserable situation, stating ´I am Tolstoi´s son. If I wasn´t, I would be happy since long time ago, and with some money in my pocket. At this moment I only have 1 Fr 50 ct, my cold room isn´t paid and my dinner for tomorrow is uncertain. I beg you help me.´, further continuing ´There are two ways, one would be sending me, lending me some money. (I might return it one day). The other would be ordering me a bust of you or someone of your family, you will be satisfied. If you want, I will send you my last book, `The Truth about my Father´. My literature works are insufficient to get me out of misery...´. A letter of excellent content, not least for its two references to his father. The extreme upper edge of the first page has been neatly trimmed, with only a very slight loss of text, otherwise VG £250-350
