*Alberto Santos-Dumont. An early 20th century papier mache bust of the famous pioneer aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, modelled in flying jacket, helmet and goggles on integral base with his name in large capitals, 28cm high x 24cm wide Alberto Santos-Dumont (1873-1932), was a Brazilian aviation pioneer and dedicated himself to aeronautical study and experimentation in Paris. In his early career he designed, built, and flew hot air balloons and early dirigible and in 1901 he won the Deutsch de la Meurthe prize a flight that rounded the Eiffel Tower. In 1906 his 14-bis made the first powered heavier-than-air flight in Europe to be certified by the Aero club de France and the Federatrion Aeronautique Internationale. Santos Dumont is considered a national hero in Brazil and has countless roads, plazas, schools etc named after him. (1)
A mid 19th century black silk taffeta evening bodice with panelled sections edged with silk fringing and decorated with appliqued beaded and sequinned lace butterfly motifs, together with another bodice in a plaid pattern in viridian green, cream and black, with fine crochet edging. Black bodice: some loss to beads and sequins on butterfly motifs, one motif missing. He was Lieutenant-Colonel of the Wiltshire County Militia, a Commissioner for Trade, and Groom of the Chamber to King George III. He was M.P. for Calne (1747-61), Maidstone (1761-68) and Great Bedwyn (1768-1770). He was married twice, firstly to Anne, daughter of the Rt. Hon. Edward Hopkins, M.P., Secretary of State for Ireland, and secondly to Miss Thompson. His son, William, was also an M.P.The late Dr. John Hayes and Hugh Belsey have dated this portrait to the 1760s.It remained in the sitter’s family until it was sold at Sotheby’s, London, on 15th November 1989. It is one of two portraits of the sitter by Gainsborough. The other, long referred to as ‘Man in Medlar-Red Coat’ (E. K. Waterhouse, Gainsborough, 1958, page 101, no. 778) was sold at Sotheby’s, New York, on 3rd June 1988, lot 120.
