A 16th Century Italian Cinquedea or short sword, characteristic 46cm broad and sharply tapering flattened diamond section blade, gilt bronze mounted hilt, the downturned guard in the form of two opposing acanthus scrolls, the large stepped spherical pommel with roped edge decorated on either side with a profile bust of a nobleman and a noblewoman each on a rayed ground and with an acanthus wreath in surround, copper wire bound iron framed grip.
