FRENCH SCHOOL, CIRCA 1780 PENDANT PORTRAITS OF YOUNG GIRLS a pair, bust length, pastel, oval, 38 x 30cm These delightful French pastels of two girls, presumably sisters, can be dated quite precisely to c1780/85 because of their hairstyle. Clearly sisters of rank, their identity and the artist are unknown. A rare bronze medal commemorating the laying of the foundation of Covent Garden Theatre by George, Prince of Wales, by Peter Rouw (1771-1852), 1808, bronze relief medal, the obverse with a profile bust of the Prince of Wales in high relief, signed Rouw to truncation, cast separetely and pinned to flan, the reverse with inscription GEORGIUS. PRINCEPS. WALLIARUM. THEATRI. REGIIS. INSTAURANDI. AUSPICIIS. IN. HORTIS. BENEDICTINIS. LONDINI. FUNDAMENTA. SUA. MANU. LOCAVIT., 91mm diameter, very fine. BHM 638; Eimer 990 Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Joseph Farington R.A. (1747-1841). Latterly in the collection of Alec Clunes (1912-1970), actor and theatre manager. A contemporary hand-written note on circular paper in brown ink providing details of the history of the medal and itÂ’s ownership accompanies this medal. It is believed that eighteen medals were struck from the die, which was then broken, one being laid under the foundation stone, seven given to the Prince of Wales, and one each to the King, the Queen, the Duke of Northumberland, Sir Thomas Lawrence R.A., Richard Payne Knight, the British Museum, the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge and Robert Smirke, the architect. According to the hand-written note, this copy was given by Smirke to his close friend Joseph Farington R.A. -1
