Leonardo De Vinci - Deformed Heads, By Wenceslaus Hollar / Description: The Leonardo da Vinci studies of deformed heads are famous. A couple with deformed faces depicted bust-length, facing each other, the woman at left wearing a cap and veil, smiling at the man, with fuzzy hair, laughing, wearing a jacket over striped shirt; after Leonardo da Vinci; first state, before '3' added to lower right. 1645. Etching by Wenceslaus Hollar after Leonardo da Vinci. Signed upper right 'Leonardo da Vinci inue: / W. Hollar fecit 1645'. From the series: Varie Figuræ et Probæ , a series of thirteen etched plates + title after Leonardo da Vinci, with studies of heads, including grotesques; see New Hollstein (Hollar) 737-750. / Dimensions: 7,50 x 10,60 cm / Condition: A very good sharp early impression of the first state before the number with full plate border and tread margins. On a dense laid paper with partial watermark. Condition is very good with no folds, tears or stains. Rembrandt Van Rijn - Self-portrait in cap and scarf - 1633 / Description: Self-portrait of Rembrandt, in a cap and scarf with the face dark, bust directed to left but face to front. Rembrandt's signature and date, in lower margin: "Rembrandt f. 1633. This is an early impression of the third state. The first state was unfinished and known in only one example. In the third state small alterations to the more common second state were made to the lid of the left eye and the shade of the moustache but still generally untouched. Before the later rework by Basan in the fourth state and the heavy rework in the fifth state. / Dimensions: 13,30 x 10,40 cm / Condition: An early third state impression, superb, richly-inked with little to no sign of wear, even in the most densely cross-hatched areas such as the shadow on the face, the beret and the cloak. With full plate borders and small margins on a dense laid paper. Condition is near perfect, former hinges at top corners vaguely visible. Jan Chalon - Four head studies following Rembrandt / Description: Four delicate portraits very close in style to Rembrandt. Jan Chalon was the brother of the female artiste Christina Chalon and the father-in -law of the publisher Christian Josi. Rembrandt was his great example and like his great master he developed a bold etching style aiming always aiming towards progression, not really following the influence of his Contemporains, and averse to commercial gain. He destroyed many of his work even before it was published if it did not fits his standards. The largest one is signed upper left: J Chalon invent J Chalon Fecit. Amongst the subjects: Bust of a young man with mid-length hair, slightly turned to the left, wearing a fur-lined coat. c.1788-1793 and an old man with large beard and cap very close to Rembrandt. / Dimensions: 8,20 x 6,20 the largest, 5,80 x 4,70 cm the smallest / Condition: Very good early impressions with much plate tone and still som ink in the plate borders and little scratches in the plate.
