Enzo Plazzotta, A female bust, bronze unsigned, 49cm Enzo Plazzotta (1921-1981) was born in Mestre, near Venice. He initially studied architecture and sculpture in Milan, his studies were, however, interrupted by World War II. He became a partisan leader near Lake Maguire. After the war he was commissioned by the Italian Committee of Liberation to commemorate their collaboration with British Special Forces. He presented the statuette personally to the Special Forces Club in London and stayed, falling for the English freedom of political thought. He became known for portraiture, horse and dance subjects. An Early 20th Century German Porcelain Beerstein, printed and painted with a bust portrait of "Musketier Kaiser", and scenes of battle and camp life in colours, a lithophane panel set to the base interior, and with domed pewter cover embossed with martial trophies, with figural knop and Prussian eagle thumbpiece; a very similar smaller beerstein. Jean Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805). A pair of portraits. The first; Portrait of a daughter of the artist bust length beside a table with pewter and other items. The second; Portrait of a daughter of the artist bust length facing left. Each signed and dated 1766 lower left centre. Each oil on canvas. Each 41cm x 33cm. Each in carved giltwood frames. Provenance: Collection of the Counts Moltke Moltke Palace Copenhagen. The Old Rectory Peasemore. Sometime with Arthur Tooth and Sons stock number 1192. The labels on the back of these pictures state that one of these daughters Anna Genevieve (1762-1842) later became a painter and that they are probably the finest existing works by the artist. In Jean-Georges Wille's Memoirs et Journal Paris 1837 p.322 he writes J'ay mene M.Le Conte de Moltke et M.Hellfried chez M. Greuze de qui achete deux tetes superbe representant deux filles. Je les ay payees quarante louis d'or pour M. le Comte de Moltke. Also see Mario Krohn Frankrigs og Denmarks Kunstneriske Forbindelse 1 Det 18 Ahrhundrede Copenhagen 1922. Illustrated plates 16 and 17; described on page 195. The Moltke Palace perhaps the finest example of Danish Rococo architecture built between 1750-54 for the Lord High Steward Adam Gottlob Moltke was subsequently sold to Christian VII of Denmark and now forms part of the Amalienborg Palace.
