Evelyn Pickering (1855-1919)A classically-inspired plaster of paris bust of a male, with slightly stern expression and wild curly hair, supported on an integral socle base and exhibiting a pale green-grey patination, (some damage), 77cm high, signed 'Evelyn Pickering' and dated '1873' Evelyn Pickering is perhaps better known as the wife of the eminent potter William de Morgan (1839-1917) and herself a very accomplished artist, painting in the Pre-Raphaelite style, her work full of allegory and symbolism. She studied at the Slade school where she was one of the earliest female students and her uncle, the artist Roddam Spencer Stanhope, a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, helped to shape her style. He lived in Florence and she made frequent visits to him and to study the Renaissance masters. G.F. Watts said of her ÒI look upon her as the first woman artist of the day Ð if not of all timeÓ. The date of the piece on offer would indicate its creation during her Slade years.
