Gilt medal fine, others very fine and better, two pierced for suspension £60-£80 --- James Montgomery (1771-1854), writer of hymns and poetry; b Irvine, Ayrshire; moved to Fulbeck, Leeds, then to Glossop road, Sheffield, working with Joseph Gales, publisher of the Sheffield Register, later the Sheffield Iris, of which he was the proprietor from 1794 to 1825; founding member of the Sheffield Sunday School Union in 1812, with the intention of educating working children on Sundays, especially in literacy, and fighting for child labour laws to keep children out of chimneys. Montgomery Hall (now Montgomery Theatre) in the city was named after him

Jenkinson, 1894), 68mm (cf. DNW M7, 2127). Extremely fine, rare; in fitted maroon gilt-blocked case of issue [this damaged] £80-£100 --- See footnote to Lot 1175. The Sheffield School of Art (now the Sheffield Hallam University’s Department of Art and Design) was originally established in Sheffield in 1843 and so-named in 1855. The medal was subscribed to by the ladies of Sheffield as an annual prize
