By reducing Customs duties and allowing free-trade, Peel ensured the dominance of British trade worldwide. He also reformed criminal law, established a police force "Peelers" or "Bobbies", and repealed the protectionist Corn Laws in 1846.

While preparing to attack he received orders to retreat and hand over his command, which he ignored. Following his subsequent victory he was knighted and later rose to rank of Admiral.

A Bust of the Hop Queen, after John Durham ARA, Copeland, for The Ceramic and Crystal Palace Art Union, published January 1878, impressed "Copeland A73" and titled on the reverse, 33.5cm high; together with A Copeland Parian Scroll Form Wall Bracket, impressed marks, 21cm high (2) In Copeland (Robert) Parian, Copeland's Statuary Porcelain, Antique Collectors Club, this piece is illustrated on page 212. The "Hop Queen" may have been intended as a companion bust to the "May Queen". She may have her origins in an ancient fertility right or festival to render thanks for a satisfactory harvest.

The original work, reviewed in The Art Journal 1862, was described as the last work of art ever touch upon by the hand of the Prince Consort; "Having engaged his attention so lately as the 28 and 30 of last November; on the former day His Royal Highness worked with his own hands on the clay, adding by his touches to the individual character of the bust". Thirty copies were issued after the Princess's death in 1879, as prizes for The Art Union. Princess Alice Maud Mary (1843-78) was the third child and second daughter of Queen Victoria, who married Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse in 1862. She died of diphtheria on 14 November 1878, age 35.
