Herma as a young Dionysus. Rome 1st-3rd century AD.Giallo antico marble.Provenance: Private collection, Paris, France. In good state of preservation. Restored on the nose.Measurements: 15.2 cm (height). The herma is a Greek creation whose origin dates back to the 6th century BC. It is a pillar sculpted in stone, generally with a square section, on which was placed the bust of the god Hermes, from whom it takes its name, while on the front of the pillar was carved an erect phallus, a symbol of fertility, but also of defence and prophylaxis. However, other theories maintain that, as in the piece we are now bidding on, the first herma actually represented Dionysus, god of fertility and nature in its primordial state. The hermai (herma in plural) were placed in rural areas to mark out roads and establish the boundaries of properties, although in the cities it was common to find them outside houses, next to a figure of Hecate, protector of crossroads.
