IST VBER IHN DER ENGEL HUT, 43.5mm, roundels of King Augustus II of Saxony, the Electress Christiane Eberhardine of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, a cleric and 20 of biblical scenes, the text marked on each (see Goppel 1151 for reverse; Koch -; Whiting -). Medal and contents very fine, very rare. The roundels probably all designed by Gottfried Rogg and engraved by Abraham Reinshart, though their separate signatures appear on one roundel each.

Very fine. The monumental tomb, the work of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, was completed in 1777 and is found in the Church of St Thomas in Strassburg.

WORLD COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Art Medals, Germany, Josef Hilarius Eckhel (1737-1798), Jesuit priest and numismatist, Uniface Portrait Medal in Berlin Iron, by or after Leonhard Posch, bust right, name behind, IOSEPHUS ECKHEL, 73mm. Extremely fine. Echkel was admitted to the Jesuit Order at the age of fourteen, where he was to devote himself to the study of antiquities and numismatics. He was appointed keeper of the cabinet of coins at the Jesuits’ College, Vienna in 1772 and after the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773, was appointed professor of antiquities and numismatics at the University of Vienna and keeper of the imperial cabinet of coins.

Struck with a matt surface and smokey grey tone, virtually mint state. In 1898 Prince George of Greece was made the High Commissioner of Crete under the suzerainty of the Sultan. Prince George was friendly with his cousin Nicholas, later Nicholas II. In 1891 he accompanied him on his voyage to Asia where, in Japan on 11 May, he was to save him from an assassination attempt in Japan in what became known as the Otsu Incident.

WORLD COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Art Medals, Greece, Alexander I (1893-1917-1920), Gold Medallic Coinage, 4-Ducats, 1917, by Brulat, bust of Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos right, rev shield of arms on eagle, dates to either side, 1909-1917, milled edge, 12.05g (KM X -). Much as struck, though double-striking to reverse, choice extremely fine and without any sign of having been mounted, variety unlisted by Bruce. During this very turbulent period of modern Greece, the country was divided between Royalists and Republicans and supporters of both factions commissioned the striking of medallic 4-Ducat “coins”, which were intended to be worn by the lady-supporters of either faction. In this condition and having never been mounted, they are exceptionally rare.

Extremely fine. The Greek born Athenagoras I became Patriarch in 1948 and met Paul VI on the Mount of Olives on 5 January, 1964, for him “To say ‘Good Morning’ to my beloved brother the Pope. You must remember that it is five hundred years since we have spoken to each other!”.

The medal was commissioned by the Doge’s son, Cardinal (1626) Federico Corner (1579-1653), who was to be the Patriarch of Venice from 1631-1644; his brother was Francesco Corner, who had the shortest rule of any Doge (19 days, 17 May to 5 June 1656).

WORLD COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Art Medals, Italy, Guiseppe Mazzini (1805-1872), Political activist for the Unification of Italy, uniface circular Bronze Portrait Plaque, c.1849, bearded bust left, name around, 137mm, suspension ring. The style somewhat elementary, extremely fine and rare. Guiseppe Mazzini – “The beating heart of Italy”, joined with Garibaldi during the revolts of 1848-1849. He was exiled in London on several occasions. The cataloguers know of no other medallic portraits of Mazzini.

WORLD COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Art Medals, Russia, Sviatoslav I, Igorevich (945-972 AD), the Visit of (Saint) Olga to Greece, 955 AD, large Copper Medal, number 60 from the Historical Series, by T Ivanov and (reverse) I C Jaeger, struck during the reign of Catherine II, armoured bust of Sviatoslav right, holding shield before him, rev Olga, with three male attendants about to board a ship, 79mmm (Diakov 1727; Smirnov 122). Slightest of edge bruises, extremely fine. Olga (or Helga), born in about 890 AD, was the wife of Prince Igor of Russia and after his death in 945 AD she was regent for their son. In 957 AD (not 955 AD as on the medal) she visited Constantinople. She either then, or earlier, became a Christian though she did not succeed in converting her son.

Slight curvature of flan, from breaking dies, otherwise virtually mint state with glossy tone. There are two varieties of Betts 526, with and, as here, without the title REV in the obverse legend.

WORLD COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Art Medals, United States of America and the Americas, France / USA, The Statue of Liberty Inaugurated, large Copper Medal, 1886, by Louis-Oscar Roty (1846-1911), for the Union Franco-Americaine, and the Centenary of Ameican Independence, 1876, winged female figure rows the figures of France and America towards the statue, rev medallic bust of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904), on shields and olive branch, legends below and around, 100mm, in leather case of issue (with adhesive tape repairs) (Maier 92; Baxter 30, 68mm). A handsome medal, extremely fine and this larger diameter very rare. The Union Franco-Americaine was established to oversee the gift of the Statue of Liberty, which was sculpted by Bartholdi and engineered by Gustave Eiffel. The opening ceremony was held on the 28 October 1886.

WORLD COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Art Medals, United States of America and the Americas, USA, Naval Interest, The Great White Fleet, Circumnavigation of the World in 1907, Bronze Plaque, by William Barber, bust of Theodore Roosevelt left, rev a classical figure bids farewell to the fleet, 80mm x 60mm maximum. Extremely fine. In 1907 a US Navy Fleet embarked on a circumnavigation of the globe which was completed in 1909. The fleet comprised 16 battle ships, along with escorts, all of which had their hulls painted white, the US Navy’s peacetime colour. It was a display of goodwill which also served to prove the seaworthiness of the navy, enforce treaties and protect overseas holdings.

Nearly extremely fine, an important association item. Davies Gilbert (born Davies Giddy, 1767-1839), engineer, author, and politician, President of the Royal Society (1827-1830). He served Cornwall as High Sheriff and MP for Helston, then Bodmin. It was Gilbert who obtained William IV’s Royal Patronage in 1835, no doubt the reason he received the medal which shows the Society’s name with the Royal prefix.

WORLD COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Medals by Subject, Sport, Olympic Games, Italy, the Italian National Olympic Committee, pair of large Silvered-bronze Medals, 1949, issued by Stabilimenti Artistici Fiorentini, obv helmeted bust of Victory to right, rev Olympic rings, COMITATO OLIMPICO NAZIONALE ITALIANO, engraved “FIDAL – ROMA 22 maggio 1949”, and signed Maneti(?), obv semi-naked athlete held aloft on a shield, TRIVMPHVS, rev as first but not engraved, both 94mm, each in leather fitted case of issue. Lot 3096

ANCIENT COINS, Greek, Kingdom of Parthia, Phraates I (168-164 BC) through to Mithradates I (164-132 BC), Period 165-148 BC, Silver Drachm, 3.81g, 12h, minted at Hekatompylos(?), diademed bust left in bashlyk, wearing single turn torque, dotted border, rev archer seated right on omphalos (S 10.17 (probably an issue of Phraates II); Sunrise 256). About very fine and very rare. ex David Sellwood Collection, The New York Sale XXXIV, Markov / Baldwin / M&M / Goldberg, January 2015, lot 337 Sellwood tentatively assigned this issue to Phraates II. However, given that Phriapatius had already been divinised around 170 BC (see lot 333 with ΘΕΟY) and that the final beardless and bashlyk type Drachms were minted around 148/7 BC, it is likely that one of the two sons of Phriapatius, Phraates I or Mithradates I, minted the S 10.17 Drachms with “Son of a Divine Father”.
