Francis Montague Handley (American late 19th century) a sculpted marble bust of a woman, believed to be HRH Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge (Mary Adelaide Wilhelmina Elizabeth, 27 November 1833 - 27 October 1897), dated 1880, portrayed looking slightly to dexter, her lips pouting and deeply carved eyes with an intent gaze and her hair tied back in a tightly knitted French twist, her clothes carved with intricate details to the ruff and the embroidery on the folds in the clothing, signed F M Handley / Rome / 1880 to rear, on a waisted socle, 61cm high overall Provenance: from the Ducommun Dit Verron collection Francis Montague Handley was an American sculptor who was an active in the United states and Italy in the latter part of the 19th century. He is known to have exhibited works at The Royal Academy of Arts summer exhibition in 1873, 1876 and a further three works in 1880.
