The recorded history of the city goes back to the 3rd century BC, being mentioned by Megasthenes, the Greek ambassador to India, and Kautilya, a minister of the Mauryan emperor Chandragupta Maurya. Signs of human settlements and Roman trade links dating back to 300BC. The temple city is dedicated to Meenakshi, a form of Parvati, and her husband Sundareswarar, a local form of Shiva. Though the present temple was built between 1623 and 1655 AD It is said that the temple was actually built in the 6th century BC. Property of a West Yorkshire lady; acquired from BidAncient, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, UK, 15 June 2005; with the original Certificate of Authenticity, bank receipt and correspondence. See Mattusch, C. Pompeii and the Roman Villa: Art and Culture Around the Bay of Naples, London, 2008, for similar examples. Previously identified as the goddess Diana, the appliqué is that of a maenad, a female follower of Bacchus, god of wine. The characteristic features of the maenads were a wreath of ivy and vine leaves, as well as a cloak made from the skin of a fawn, all of which are present on this piece. The wide expressive eyes on this piece suggest ritual intoxication and ecstatic frenzy for which the maenads were noted during their worship of Bacchus.
