An Egyptian bronze head of a cat, 26th Dynasty 700-500 BC, authenticated by the British Museum. Exceptionally fine, complete, hollow cast, elegantly proportioned with naturalistic detailing. The pierced ears adorned with banded gold hoop earrings, thought to be original. The bust, in the form of a funerary mask was a devotional offering to the deity Bastet. Its fine modelling, the presence of gold and the overall quality of the mask would indicate it was commissioned by a person of high status and considerable means. The ears are deeply recessed with narrow horizontal banded details, as are the areas around the nose and mouth in an imitation of whiskers or fur. The right eye has a pupil incised into its surface. Lightly modelled around its neck is a collar or necklace, with four narrow rows of decorative banding. Centrally positioned at the back of the neck is a small hole which may have been a fixing point for further decoration. The whole mounted upon a two-tiered, polished black slate base. Unmounted: height 12.5cm, width 8.5cm, depth 13.5cm. Including base: height 18.3cm, width 9.5cm, depth 13.5cm. (See front cover illustration) Provenance: from the estate of Douglas Liddell, Managing Director of Spink & Son 1976-87. Authenticated by the British Museum.
