Marcelli Palingenii Stellati poetae doctissimi Zodiacus vitae, hoc est, de hominis vita, studio, ac moribus optime instituendis libri XII, Basel: Nikolaus Brylinger heirs, 1566, bound after: Hesiod, Opera, quae quidem extant, omnia Graece, cum interpretatione Latina eregione, Basel: Paul Queck, [1564], 2 works in 1 volume, Manzolli signatures a-z8 A-B8 C5, Hesiod signatures as in Adams but lacking 6 preliminary leaves (alpha 2-7), toning, occasional light soiling, early marginalia and underlining in black ink, contemporary pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, manuscript spine-title, date in a later hand to foot, covers decoratively blind-stamped with bust portrait of Martin Luther to front and Philip Melanchthon to rear, each after Lucas Cranach the Younger, 3 lines of verse below each portrait, decorative outer roll to each cover including profile portraits of Erasmus and others, rubbed and soiled overall, wear to extremities, retaining one metal clasp only, 8vo (16 x 10.2 cm) (Qty: 1)NOTESProvenance: 1) Joachim Freybergk, ownership inscription dated 1568 to front free endpaper. 2) 'Dr S. Clarke', with lengthy bibliographical annotation on Manzolli to terminal blank of Hesiod, in a 19th-century hand. 3) Brian S. Donaghey (1940-2015), Australian medievalist and professor at the University of Sheffield, with book-label. Adams H474 (Hesiod); VD16 M 858 (Manzolli) & H 2685 (Hesiod). The binding is unsigned but the use of opposing blind-stamped portraits of Martin Luther and Philip Melanchthon recalls the work of known Wittenberg binders including Thomas Krüger, Severin Rötter and Nikolaus Müller (see British Library shelfmarks Davis 692 and c46d18).

A circular mourning pendant, c.1836, the obverse with a miniature bust within gilt surround, captioned 'Comte d'Artois', split across the Count's head, gilt surround scratched with some loss, brown plaited hair laid in to the reverse under glass, 22 mm diameter (Qty: 1)NOTESCharles only reigned for six years (1824-30) and for most of his life he was known as the Count of Artois.

John Wesley A.M.’ c.1760, f eaturing an o val medallion bust of Wesley facing right with legend beneath, 77 x 77 mm, loosely inlaid onto the velvet cushion of a purpose-made fake book, an old impression from the plate to facing marbled pastedown, 19th-century green morocco-backed marbled boards, spine with raised bands and red leather label titled ‘Rev. EDWARD SMITH; a Victorian hallmarked silver snuff box with foliate and reeded detail, the hinged lid with engraved bull's hear armorial, with gilt washed interior, Birmingham 1837 (still with William IV bust), width 7.6cm, approx 2.2ozt/68g.Additional InformationRubbing to the engraved detail of the lid, further general wear commensurate with age throughout, tarnish, some loss to the gilt wash of the interior, scratches, nicks, etc.
An exceptionally rare cased Hermann Göring Award for Industry, the hinged lid set with spread eagle and swastika enclosing a fitted velvet lined interior set with a white metal chain with ten square section panels interspersed with swastikas and spread eagles on double link chains terminating in a bust medallion of Göring inscribed 'Hermann Göring Auszeichnung für die Industrie', the bust pendant approx 8cm, the case 40 x 30cm.
A Parian ware bust of Beethoven raised on socle base, height 29cm.Additional InformationWhere the socle meets the main section there has been some damage, this appears to have been a section which has come away and been crudely glued spurning a small loss, there is a tiny thin chip to the back of the bust, some surface marks noticeably to the raised areas and the piece is very dirty.

Anacreontic Society.- Admission Ticket for entrance to the Anacreontic Society, made out to "Stranger" in very light brown ink, engraved ticket depicting a man and a woman draping garlands around a bust of Anacreon, on laid paper, small cut affecting legend at head, browned, [cf. a copy in Paul Mellon Collection], 160 x 106mm., by F. Bartolozzi after William Lawrenson, [c. 1779].⁂ The Anacreontic Society, a London club founded in 1766 for aristocratic amateur musicians.

An important and rare George II York House Factory enamel table snuff box, transfer-printed in puce after Simon François Ravenet (1706-1774), the rectangular hinged cover with Britannia presenting a medal and flanked by the allegories of Art and Science, enclosing a bust-length portrait profile of Frederick, Prince of Wales, the sides with amorini emblematic of the Arts, Sciences and Commerce within alternating Rococo C-scroll borders, the base with martial amorini, the British lion and centred by a military trophy, gilt-metal mounts, 8.5cm wide, Battersea, c. 1753-1756This very box is described and illustrated: Benjamin (Susan), English Enamel Boxes, London: Orbis, 1991, page 38: figure 2, and is also illustrated on the dustjacket.
