James Heffernan (1788 - 1847). A marble bust, possibly Miss E. W. Hill, the verso signed `J HEFFERNAN Sculp LONDON 1825`, 24.5in (62cm) h. James Heffernan was born in Londonderry and came to London in his early 20`s and soon entered Sir Francis Legatt Chantrey`s studio, where he remained until Chantrery`s death in 1841. He exhibited at the RA between 1816-1830 and in 1825 he showed a bust of Miss E.W.Hill.

A fine example of the aesthetics of New China before the Cultural Revolution. The subtly self-conscious oriental overtones suggest it was probably made for the overseas market.
