A PLASTER BUST OF THE ROMAN EMPEROR HADRIAN (76 AD-138 AD) CONTEMPORARY Cast by the Museé Du Louvre, on a circular socle, marked 'MUSÉE DU LOUVRE REPRODUCTION INTERDITE ATELIERS DE MOULAGE' 90cm high Provenance: The Simon Neal Collection This monumental plaster is taken from an imperial Roman marble bust of the Emperor Hadrian, now in the collections of the Musée du Louvre, Paris (marbre 1189). The bust was originally discovered near Rome's Esquiline Hill and dates from circa 125 - 150 AD. The ancient marble then entered the collection of Giampietro Campana, the Marchese di Cavelli (1808 - 1880), who amassed one of the most significant private collections during the 19th century. In 2019, an exhibition of 400 items originally from the Campana collection was jointly organised by the State Hermitage and the Musée du Louvre.Condition Report: The bust bears wear, marks, scratches, abrasions and scuffs throughout. The majority of these are in the manufacture of the item in order to simulate greater age. Some later chips of loss and abrasions - see images for details. Some of these losses have been disguised with cream paint. Larger chip of loss to top of one ear - see image. To the lower edge of the truncation there are some areas of adhesive/filler applied - see images. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition. Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 468

AN ITALIAN POLYCHROME MARBLE BUST OF THE ROMAN EMPEROR HADRIAN (76 AD-138 AD) 19TH CENTURY Carved from Rosso Antico, Giallo Antico, and lapis lazuli, on a turned white marble socle 19cm highProvenance: The Simon Neal Collection

Lot 481

A POLYCHROME MARBLE BUST OF A ROMAN PATRICIAN WOMAN AFTER THE ANTIQUE A 17th century (or earlier) torso, with an 19th century Giallo Antico head 22cm high Provenance: The Simon Neal Collection The taste for coloured marbles used by the ancients was revived in Italy during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Around this time, sculptors began to reuse ancient stones and marble fragments, known as 'spolia', for their new works. They often re-carved ancient stones or made later additions to them, which is probably the case with this example, as the head (carved from Giallo Antico) is modelled in a later 18th century style, whilst the torso is decidedly earlier, either 17th century or perhaps ancient. Sculptors and their patrons who engaged in the practice of re-using ancient 'spolia', did so because of the social cache these fragments offered, through their intractable associations with Roman imperial power, as much as it may have been for the love of a particular stone's aesthetic beauty.

Lot 482

A POLYCHROME MARBLE BUST OF JULIUS CAESAR (100 BC - 44 BC) 19TH CENTURY White marble with Giallo Antico toga, on a rosso antico socle 28cm high Provenance: The Simon Neal Collection Julius Caesar was one of Republican Rome's most talented generals. His armies were loyal and followed him on many successful campaigns. After conquering Gaul and starting a drive against Britain he returned to Rome, where his success was viewed with increasing suspicion. Having defeated his rival Pompey, he clashed with the strongly Republican senate as he tried to cement his political strength into an absolute monarchy. A group of senators, led by Cassius and Brutus, assassinated Julius Caesar in 44 BCE. This brought about the final round of civil wars that ended the Roman Republic and led to the elevation of Octavian as Augustus, the first Emperor. Condition Report: Bust with the marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions consistent with age. Deposits to the ceases and folds of the carving as expected with age. Some old chips and 'nibbles'. It is likely that the socle is later associated. Adhesive visible between the truncation and the socle. The socle has natural cracks to the surface of the marble. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition. Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 495

A SOUTH ITALIAN ALABASTER BUST OF A ROMAN EMPEROR POSSIBLY 17TH CENTURY Believed to be a portrait of Constantine The Great (C.272-337 AD), with carved breast plate, on a Siena marble socle 36cm high Provenance: The Simon Neal Collection The combination of the classical subject matter, yet the slightly distorted, non-classical proportions and the polychrome marble and alabaster material it is made from, suggests a 17th century date for this Italian bust. The style of carving suggests the work may have been executed in one of Italy's southern provincial centres of baroque artistic production, such as Sicily. In the early 17th century, the island became associated with coloured marbles, after numerous agates and jaspers were found there, as well as richly coloured and lively patterned marbles that took a very high polish. It is believed the word 'Baroque' derived from the French translation of the Portuguese word 'borrocco' - meaning misshapen pearl - which indeed appears to be an appropriate description of the character of this bust. The subject of the work is a Roman emperor, the closest likeness perhaps being provided by portraits of Constantine the Great (c.272 - 337 AD), who was proclaimed emperor in 306 AD, in the English city of York. His recognition of his Christian subjects and his own conversion to the Faith, laid the religious foundations of Western Christendom. Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions consistent with age. Some small chips, knocks and losses in places throughout - see images. Some old cracks. The laurels appear to have the remnants of a dark painted surface. The pedestal with some filler applied in places. Adhesive visible between the neck and the body. This has age but is likely later. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition. Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 514

AN ITALIAN WHITE MARBLE BUST OF THE ROMAN EMPEROR MARCUS AURELIUS (121 AD-180 AD) 17TH/18TH CENTURY 68cm high Provenance: The Simon Neal Collection The apparent age of the marble and the carving style employed in the execution indicates a 17th or early 18th century date for this bust of Marcus Aurelius, one of the most popular Roman emperors. The philosopher-emperor is perhaps most famous for a work his subjects never saw, his 'Meditations'. Written in Greek, during his long campaigns against the German tribes, it represented an intimate notebook that recorded his own reflections on human life and the ways of the gods. It seems to have survived almost by accident and was unknown to the writers of his time and for long afterwards but seems to have surfaced at some point in the 4th century.  Please note, this lot should be dated as '17th/18th century' and not as printed in the catalogue.Condition Report: There are marks, scratches, knocks, chips, cracks and abrasions to this bust. There is a layer of variable discolouration and a muddy coloured plaster like residue in places including recesses that can be scratched off with a fingernail. There are chips including but not exclusively to the nose, draping robes and socle. The roundel to the fabric on the shoulder is sectional and with some small movement where it joins the bust. There is a repair to a section of folding fabric close to the roundel. Please see the additional photographs for a visual reference of condition.Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 546

AN ITALIAN WHITE MARBLE BUST OF THE FIRST ROMAN EMPEROR CAESAR AUGUSTUS (63 BC- 14 AD) LIKELY 17TH CENTURY BUT POSSIBLY EARLIER 50cm high Provenance: The Simon Neal Collection This monumental and imposing head of the first Roman emperor Caesar Augustus (63 BC - 14 AD) was likely carved in the 17th century, or perhaps earlier, originating from a provincial Roman workshop. At some point in its history it would seem to have had a cast taken from it to judge from a remnant of plaster in one nostril. As founder of the Roman Principate, Augustus has been much lauded as one of the founders of western civilisation and his image celebrated and reproduced in Italian art since the start of his reign in 27 BC.Condition Report: The surface is dirty throughout- from atmosphere predominately. Also with paint (?) splashes to reverse. In the hands of a competent and careful restorer/conservator this should be cleanable but to what extent only a trained practitioner would be able to advise. Some light surface abrasions but with more significant historic losses notably to the nose and some rubbing to margins. Left ear with hole. Stand is part of the lot. Please see additional images which form part of this condition reportCondition Report Disclaimer
