BRITISH 18th CENTURY TOKENS, John Wilkinson, Silver Three-Shillings and Sixpence, 1788, obv bust in profile right, IOHN WILKINSON IRON MASTER around, plain coat with collar, four buttons on coat, upper tie of queue points to the N of IOHN, two points to queue under shoulder, tip of the coat almost touches the rim, stop after R, the stop in line with the centre of R, nose to MA, rev barge under sail left, FINE SILVER around, 1788 in exergue, edge WILLEY SNEDSHILL BERSHAM BRADLEY (Atkins p.228, 251; D&H Warwickshire 337). Trifling marks, otherwise better than extremely fine and attractively toned. Wilkinson seems to have seriously considered the idea of striking silver coin to pay his workers. Originally tariffed at 3s 6d he likely would have been ultimately obliged to reduce the redemption value to 2s, something more closely approximating its worth. In any case, the venture was abandoned, with few, if any, specimens circulating for any length of time.

BRITISH 18th CENTURY TOKENS, Unknown Issuer, Copper Medal or Trial strike, obv bust in profile right, GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA . around, KETTLE under bust, rev lion rampant to left, edge plain (D&H Middlesex 944bis). Circular depression on the obverse, perhaps as made, a few edge bruises, otherwise nearly extremely fine and extremely rare. ex F S Cokayne Collection KETTLE likely refers to Henry Kettle, a die-sinker active in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries.

BRITISH 18th CENTURY TOKENS, Uniface Obverse and Reverse Halfpenny Strikings in Copper by an unknown artist, obv bust in profile right, IRON MASTER around, nose points to the S of MASTER, bowed queue extends under the base of the bust, rev AND HE SAID LET US MAKE PENNYS AFTER MY OWN IMAGE within rough border of dots, edges PAYABLE AT MACCLESFIELD LIVERPOOL OR CONGLETON . X . (listed by Atkins p.239, 330; listed by D&H as Warwickshire 334; noted here as D&H Warwickshire 334 bis I and bis II). As made and unique. (2) ex Lincoln “No. 1” Collection, acquired by F S Cokayne 30 March 1934 for £2 2/- Both Atkins and D&H listed these as the obverse and reverse of a single token. Atkins later annotated his notes, however this information may not have been conveyed to D&H who copied the details from his original publication. As these were struck on full weight Macclesfield planchets it is likely that they originated at Soho, although the artist remains unidentified.

Fine quality 19th century Italian carved shell cameo brooch, the oval panel carved in high relief depicting a classical male bust, in yellow metal brooch mount with beaded border, 45mm x 39mm CONDITION REPORT Very good condition. Shell cameo in very good condition with no damage to the carving. When held to the light there are fine hairline cracks within the shell which appear to be naturally occurring within the shell rather than damage. The brooch mount is also in good condition, good quality and appears to be high carat gold but has not been tested. One of the four 'C' scrolls which secures the cameo into the mount is missing. Total gross weight 16 grams
