Title: An Italian 'Grand Tour' marble bust of Hermes with the hand of the Infant Dionysos, 19th C.Description:H 38,8 cm Hermes and the Infant Dionysos is a statue possibly made by the ancient Greek sculptor Praxiteles. The statue was discovered in 1877 in the ruins of the Temple of Hera at Olympia, Greece. It is now in the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. The statue was probably made in the 4th century BC. This date is based on a remark by the 2nd century Greek traveller Pausanias (link). The discovery of the sculpture made the theme very popular in the last quarter of the 19th C.

Ca. 100-300 AD. An outstanding pair of bronze and iron fittings, each one comprising a spiral fluted column with an iron rod projecting from the Ionic-variant capital that is surmounted by a bust of Bacchus wearing a goat pelt with a hoof falling over his shoulder. Aside from this, his chest is revealed with delineated nipples. Bacchus' handsome face is crowned by a centrally-parted coiffure adorned by a wreath of ivy leaves and berries and pulled back into a low chignon with wavy locks cascading over his shoulders. Both of these matching busts sit upon rectangular plinths with hatched borders and a looped handle joining the plinths to the upper end of the bust's verso, just beneath the nape of the neck. Father Liber (Liber Pater) or Bacchus was the god the Romans identified with Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and fertility. He has come to be associated particularly with drunkenness and lascivious behavior. Thus, even today people speak of having “bacchic rites,” referring back to ecstatic and frenzied Dionysian or bacchic festivals such as those that take place in Euripides' play the Bacchae. Ca. 1-200 AD. A convex intaglio with a portrait of the legendary figure Hercules. This captivating depiction captures the essence of the hero through a masterful portrayal of his countenance. The bust of Hercules, rendered in his left profile, reveals an array of intricate details, including impeccably sculpted hair, a luxuriant beard, penetrating eyes that emanate depth and intensity, and a broad nose that contributes to his powerful visage. Hercules, also known as Herakles in Greek mythology, held great significance as a hero revered for his extraordinary strength and numerous heroic exploits. In Roman glyptic art, Hercules was often depicted in various scenes and poses, representing his iconic labours, his divine parentage as the son of Zeus, and his association with physical prowess and valour. The accompanying gold ring, possibly originating from a later period, features a round and slender hoop design that exudes elegance and refinement. The embellished shoulders of the ring add a touch of opulence, enhancing its overall aesthetic appeal.
