Paterne Berrichon (French, early 20th Century), a bronze bust of the French Poet Rimbaud, on an integral tapered socle, signed and dated 1902, height 25cmProvenance: auction of Oger & Dumont, Hotel Drouot, 1985.Note: bust of Rimbaud by his brother-in-law Paterne Berrichon. Pierre-Eugène Dufour made the acquaintance of Paul Verlaine, Rimbaud's lover and adopted the pseudonym ""Paterne Berrichon"" He was a fervent admirer of Arthur Rimbaud. He started a correspondence with Isabelle Rimbaud, the younger sister of the poet, which concluded in 1897 by marriage. Berrichon was also closely acquainted with Paul Claudel, younger brother of the sculptress Camille Claudel and maintained a prolific correspondence with her from 1912 until 1919. He created paintings, for which his wife often modelled, and sculpted this bust for the Rimbaud monument in the poet's birthplace, Charleville-Mézières. This cast, a reduction of the Charleville bust is possibly a unique work by a seldom seen artist with fascinating associations with the sitter and the French artistic world of the time.

A verdigris patinated bronze herm top cast as the bust of a youthful Bacchus, probably Neapolitan and cast as a Grand Tour souvenir, last quarter 19th century, portrayed with hair tied forward in a topknot, with flower heads and vine leaves to each side, 16cm high, 10cm wide The bronze here is highly comparable to a bronze herm discovered at the House of M Fabius Rufus at Pompeii. That herm, whilst usually described as representing Eros has extremely similar flower heads and facial features, and furthermore, carries a highly corresponding green/grey patina. It is therefore not unreasonable to suggest that the bronze offered here was cast by one of the great Neapolitan foundry houses, -Chiurazzi, Sommer or de Angelis, since they specialised in reproducing excavated antiquities and selling them to Tourists
