Circle of George Gray (1758-1819) A PORTRAIT OF ARCHIBALD REED ESQ., SHERIFF OF NEWCASTLE IN 1794 WEARING ROBES OF OFFICE AND HOLDING A PLAN OF THE WESTGATE oil on canvas 150 x 119cms; 59 x 46 3/4in. NB Archibald Reed was the seventh child and youngest son of Christopher Reed of Chipchase Castle. He was educated at the Grammar School, Newcastle, and served his time with a member of the Merchants' Company, beginning business on his own account in 1790 on the Sandhill. He was elected Sheriff in 1794, Alderman in 1796, Mayor in 1799, 1806, 1819, 1826, 1830 and 1831 and was undoubtedly one of the most popular men of his day. It was during his fourth mayoralty that the Duke of Wellington visited Newcastle. At this time the salary of the Mayor was £2,100 with free use of the Mansion House, carriage and horses, state barge, etc. Reed died December 13th 1842. He had lived some years in Whorlton, but at the time of his death was residing in Leazes Terrace, Newcastle. He was interred in Jesmond Cemetery, where in March 1844 a handsome monument was erected by public subscription. There is a bust and tablet by the sculptor Richard Davies in St. Nicholas' Cathedral dedicated to his memory. See illustration

Mindham, Chief Petty Officer Wtr. Royal Navy on the HMS President; a First World War Medal awarded to F.2094 H.H.L. Petty Officer Mechanic in the Royal Naval Air Service, with original box and ribbon and silver medallion; a First World War General Service Medal awarded to 3103 Private L.E. Plummer, 11th Batallion First Australian Imperial Force; a silver Overseas Nursing Association 1896 medal on 1927 bar; and a similar in base metal; etc.
