A late 18th century English carved and painted wooden doll with provenance, with inset enamel dark eyes, slight carved nose, high forehead, remains of hair nails down back of head, recently added brown hair, turned flat backed torso with paint to bust, replace string arms and wooden legs, recently made two part dress using antique Spitalfields silk and underclothes -25in. (63cm.) high (heavily repainted face, one eye probably replaced, other overpainted, some traces of original paint around shoulders) - this doll comes with a note written on an old envelope ‘This doll was given by the Sultan Kattegary to our little girl sometime between 1817 & 1820’, the note seems certainly to be 19th century; it is believed that Kattegary is a spelling mistake and it should be Kategorya, this means a Pilipino category or sub division when referring to Kudarat, an area named after Sultan Kudarat, a very eminent 17th Maguindanao sultan who drove out the Spanish. Kudarat is in the Sultanate of Sulu in the southern most part of the Philippines.
