*[Byron]. An autograph letter signed from John Cam Hobhouse, 1st Baron Broughton (1786-1869), to J.D. Strutt, [1820], written to accompany three letters of introduction given to Strutt by Hobhouse for his travels on the continent, saying ÔIf you see Mr. Thorswalden [sic] pray tell him to send my bust of Lord Byron directly to me by the usual means. You will confer a favour on me if you will let me hear from you on this subject from RomeÕ, giving advice on the route to travel ÔAli PachaÕs war is rather against youÕ, and mentioning Italian writer and revolutionary Ugo Foscolo for whom he encloses a letter, signed ÔJohn C. Hobhouse, Whitton Park, HounslowÕ, 4pp., folded twice, sheet size 19 x 11.5cm (7.5 x 4.5ins). One of ByronÕs dearest friends, statesman John Hobhouse was described by the poet in his dedication to the fourth canto of ÔChilde HaroldÕs PilgrimageÕ as Òa friend often tried and never found wantingÓ. It was Hobhouse who persuaded a reluctant Byron to sit for eminent sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, as ByronÕs words testify: ÒI would not pay the price of a Thorwaldsen for any human head and shoulders..... if asked - why then I sate for my own - answer - that it was at the request particular of J.C. Hobhouse Esqre. - and for no one elseÓ. The sittings took place in Rome in April and May 1817, and the original is now in the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagan. The latter also holds one of the letters of introduction referred to here, that to Thorvaldsen, dated September 1820, in which Hobhouse writes: ÒI beg leave to introduce to your favourable attentions Mr Douglas Strutt an English gentleman who proposes passing the winter at RomeÓ, going on to say ÒMr Strutt is charged with the commission of asking you what has become of the inimitable bust of Lord Byron which has been some time finished in your hands & which I was in hopes would have arrived in England more than a year ago. I have repeatedly heard from Lord Byron on the subject & he has assured me that the bust was on its road to this country. I am extremely eager to be possessed of so great a treasure.Ó (1)
