Marco Benefial ( attr. ) 1684-1764 Oval with male bust oil on canvas 56,5 x 75 cm This valuable canvas, likely for a preparatory study or particular fresco of an altarpiece, is so similar to other works by the master. Benefial was among the protagonists of the eighteenth-century Roman painting and throughout his career he remained always the balance between a recovery of historical classicism (Reni, Annibale Carracci, Guercino, Lanfranco) and a Baroque post way altered and in some ways exceeded the ubiquitous marattiano verb. Here you want to propose for this beautiful male head ? probably idea for an evangelist saw the scroll in hand and gaze at the sky like looking for inspiration ? an allocating to the Roman master for many similarities to several works known to him certainly referable. Among the most effective is a comparison with the ecstasy of St. Francis, an altarpiece in the Church of San Francesco in Bagnoregio. The head of the Angel musician and del santo, reniana, posing unique are close to intense and melancholy expression of our figure. The same sweet and distinctly classical intonation of our face is reflected in the figures of the altarpiece of San Gallicano hospital in Rome, still in place in the hospital church designed by Raguzzini. For these stylistic comparisons proposes a canvas dating circa 1730. The work is in a perfect state of preservation.
