COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Switzerland, Jean Dassier, Copper Medals (2), Louis Le Fort (1668-1748), Elected Premier Syndic of the State of Geneva, Copper Medal, 1738, by Jean Dassier, bust three-quarters left in gown of office, rev figure of Geneva with Liberty Cap on staff, attended by four putti, 54mm (Eisler II, 93, 1d); Daniel-François, Compte de Lautrec, armoured bust three-quarters left, rev Prudence flanked by Mars and Justice, 54mm (Eisler II, 93, 9c-f; Mol 329, 330; W 3175, 3172). First very fine, the second extremely fine. (2) Louis Le Fort was Chief Burgomaster of Geneva; Daniel-François, Comte de Gélas de Voisins d’Ambres, called the Comte de Lautrec, lieutenant général des armées du Roi, inspecteur général de l’infanterie, maréchal de France and the French envoy at the discussion for the Peace of Geneva. The medals allude to the efforts France made to provide peace in Geneva.

COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, USA, Canada and the Americas, Louis XV (1710-1715-1774), The French West India Company, Copper Medal, 1733, by J C Roettiers, youthful armoured bust right, with sash, hair tied behind, rev legend in seven lines SOCIETAS INDIARUM GALLICIA, caduceus and cornucopiae below, 59mm (BDM V, 181; Betts -; BCA 49, 1325). Deep scratch by the end of the reverse legend, but a contemporary striking, very fine and rare.

COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Turkey and the Ottoman Empire, c.1455, Vatican, Calixtus III, Alfonso de Borgia (1378-1455-1458), the Departure of the Fleet for action against Turkey, struck Copper Medal, by G Paladino, bust left wearing mitre and stole, rev the fleet sailing, two ships in distress, HOC VOVI DEO, 41mm (Linc 388; Arm I, 296, II). An 18th century restrike of the earlier restitutional medal, good extremely fine. Much of the policy of Calixtus’s short papacy was dictated by his vow towards directing a crusade against the Turks, who had captured Constantinople two years prior to his accession

COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Turkey and the Ottoman Empire, 1526, Maria von Habsburg (1505-1558) and Ludwig II (1506-1516-1526), The Battle of Mohacs, struck Silver Medal, bust of Maria von Habsburg left within archway, wearing small ruff collar and soft hat, legend in five lines below, rev the King, mounted and in full armour, at the head of his troops, facing a Turkish cavalry charge, legend in six lines below, 45mm (Mont 587/588; Donebauer 985; Huszar 16; Horsky 730). Very fine, struck examples are extremely rare. Ludwig II, King of Hungary and Bohemia, who was killed at the Battle of Mohacs had married Maria von Habsburg in 1552

An early aftercast, thin flan with integral suspension loop, somewhat ‘sandy’ surface, very fine and extremely rare. The medal expresses Ferdinand’s desire to re-capture the Danube from the Ottomans

Very fine.

COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Turkey and the Ottoman Empire, 1684, Vatican, Innocent XI, Odescalchi (1611-1676-1689), The Conclusion of the Alliance against the Turks, Copper Medal, Annual series, year 8, by Giovanni Hamerani, bust right, wearing cap and stoll, this decorated with Imperial Eagle and Lion of Venice, rev dove over altar on which are placed the crowns of the allies, HABETO NOS FOEDERATOS ET SERVIEMVS TIBI, 35mm (Linc 1456; BDM II, 401). Virtually as struck, with dark bronze patination. The Alliance – the Holy League of the Empire – was between the Pope, represented on the medal’s reverse with his tiara, Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor, John III Sobieski of Poland (both crowns) and Marc Antonio Giustiniani, Doge of Venice (cap)

Extremely fine with rich grey tone.

Very fine and very rare.

Choice, virtually as struck, extremely rare. Otto Wilhelm Königsmarck, Swedish Count and Military Officer (Field Marshal 1676); Governor General of Pommerania (1679).

Nearly extremely fine and extremely rare. Extremely fine and lightly toned.

COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Turkey and the Ottoman Empire, 1714, Sweden, Karl XII (1682-1697-1718), Return from Turkey, White Metal Medal, by Philip Heinrich Müller, armoured bust right, rev the King at Fortune’s altar, cherub above, REDDITUS …, 44mm, with usual copper plug (Hildebrand 170; Forster 793). Extremely fine. Following the battle of Poltava and and his defeat by the Russians, Karl escaped to Turkey, remaining there till 1714 when he fled on a horseback through Europe to Sweden.
