A stunning pair of Napoleon III style French polished green marble and gilded bronze ormolu pedestals / bust stands / jardiniere planter torcheres. Stepped octagonal top with large bronze Corinthian column decoration with light tapered centre raised on footed pedestal base with octagonal plinth and bronze gilt discs/ Measures: 114cm tall. Top measures: 35cm x 35cm.
A 19th century Italian large white marble bust of Jessie White Mario ' Hurricane Jessie ' The very heavy and large bust with notation to the neck and having wide shoulders with detailed face and chest. Measures 72 cm high x 48 cm wide. Hurricane Jessie was a nurse to General Giuseppe Garibaldi's soldiers in four wars. She researched living conditions in subterranean Naples and working conditions in Sicily sulphur mines. She wrote copiously (in English and Italian) as both a journalist and a biographer having written biographies of Giuseppe Garibaldi and Giuseppe Mazzini, to be sure; but also biographies of Dr. Agostino Bertani, Carlo Cattaneo (with Alberto Mario), Giuseppe Dolfo, Alberto Mario (with Giosuè Carducci), Giovanni Nicotera. She was gathering material for several more at the time of her death.

At the end of his tenure in 1953, the University was renowned for its excellent and carefully selected staff, and had attracted several hundred students. Over the course of his illustrious career, he served as a Supreme Court judge and Chief Justice of Eastern Nigeria.The son of Odu Mbanefo, a high ranking Ozo and member of Onitsha's royal council of chiefs, Louis attended King's College in Lagos before travelling to the UK to read law at the University of London.Having been called to the bar, he returned to establish his own practice in Onitsha. He quickly cemented his reputation as one of the leading lawyers, and in 1959 was appointed to the Nigerian Supreme Court. Diameter: 18mm. Weight: 1.91g. RIC vol. IX, no. 84b. Discussion: Magnus Maximus, commander in Britain, seized power from Gratian in AD 383. Given official rule over Britain and Gaul by Theodosius I, he over-stretched his ambitions towards the end of his reign and invaded Italy in AD 387, being defeated by Theodosius at the Battle of the Save in AD 388. His rule in Britain coincides with an apparent exodus of military power, transferring many troops to Gaul. He features notably in much Breton and Welsh folklore as the legendary figure 'Macsen'.
