The rare ‘Ashanti 1900’ C.M.G. group of four awarded to H. B. W. Russell, Private Secretary to Colonel Sir James Willcocks, Commanding Ashanti Field Force, whose actions during the course of the campaign to relieve Kumassi went above and beyond the conventional duties of a private secretary - often acting as a guide, and being involved in the fighting, despite being present in a civilian capacity The Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, C.M.G., Companion’s breast badge, silver-gilt and enamels, complete with ribbon buckle; Coronation 1902, bronze; Ashanti 1900, 1 clasp, Kumassi, high relief bust (H. B. W. Russell, C.M.G., A.F. Fce:); Colonial Auxiliary Forces L.S. & G.C., G.V.R. (Capt. H. B. W. Russell, C.M.G.) mounted as worn but lacking pin; together with original Warrant and Statutes for C.M.G. and contemporary portrait photograph of recipient in uniform, rank partially officially corrected on last, generally good very fine (4) £2,600-£3,000 --- Provenance: Dix Noonan Webb, September 2014. Henry Blythe Westrap Russell was born in Toronto, Canada, on 3 August 1868. He was educated at the Liverpool Institute and at Freiburg in the German State of Baden. He travelled extensively in West Africa and in the 1880s founded the firm of H. B. W. Russell and Co., merchants on the Gold Coast, Southern Nigeria. The company later had offices at Kumassi, Accra, Lagos and Liverpool. Whilst at Cape Coast in June 1900, Russell volunteered his services as private secretary to Colonel J. Willcocks, then assembling his staff for the Ashanti Field Force that he was to lead to the relief of Kumassi. Russell receives several mentions in From Kabul to Kumassi by Brigadier General Sir James Willcocks: ‘On this same day a gentleman at Cape Castle, Mr H. Russell, a trader of whom I had heard a good deal, and who had considerable experience of the Gold Coast, came and offered his service to me in any capacity. I was only too glad to accept them, and offered him the post of Private Secretary, an appointment which was at once approved by the Secretary of State; he proved most valuable. His knowledge of the country and language and his untiring energy were godsends in those days, and he accompanied me to Kumassi. For his services he received the C.M.G. at the close of the campaign, and it was well deserved.’ Further into the campaign, Russell was to prove considerably more hands on than a normal private secretary acting as a guide and indeed taking part in the fighting (despite being there in a civilian capacity): ‘Mr Russell, my Private Secretary, whom I had sent with this column, owing to his knowledge of the people, rendered very useful service, not only in a political sense, but by more than once accompanying the scouts and joining in the fighting.’ (Ibid) Some ‘spoils of war’ brought back to the UK by Russell have appeared on the market in recent years, but not his gift from Willcocks: ‘Among the souvenirs given to me by the officers was a fine donkey from Berekum. I took it down to the coast when I left, and gave it as a Christmas present to my Private Secretary, Mr Russell.’ (Ibid) Russell’s all action approach is further recorded by the Morning Post, 4 October 1900: ‘Operations from Kumassi - Punitive Measures. Hardships of the Campaign: On the following day a fighting column of 900 men with three guns and five Maxims under the command of Colonel Brake, who had with him as staff officers Captains Bryan and Reeve, and as political officer [sic] Mr Russell, a merchant on the West Coast left Bekwai with orders to attack Ejesu, where Queen Ashantuah was supposed to have concentrated a large force, and to have massed a quantity of loot. Advance on Ejesu: Our scouts, who were under the command of Lieutenant McKinnon, and with whom were the guides in charge of Mr Russell, were suddenly fired on by the enemy, who were lying snugly hidden behind a stockade on the bank of a river bed which crossed the road obliquely. Mr Russell went back and reported the situation personally to Colonel Brake, who hurried to the front with two 75 millimetre guns under the Hon. Lieutenant Halfpenny, of the 3rd West African Frontier Force.’ Russell was mentioned in the despatch of Colonel J. Willcocks, Commanding Ashanti Field Force, London Gazette 4 December, 1900: ‘Mr H. B. W. Russell, Private Secretary. - This gentleman volunteered his services at Cape Coast, and I was most fortunate in getting him; he has worked incessantly ever since I landed, and I strongly recommend him, especially as his chief object in coming was in order to have an opportunity of doing some service to the State.’ Russell was created a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George, London Gazette 9 November 1901 ‘in recognition of his services while employed with the Ashanti Field Force.’ This is believed to be 1 of only 2 such awards for the Ashanti campaign. In 1906 Russell was appointed Consul of the Netherlands at Cape Coast Castle, for the Gold Coast, Lagos and Nigeria, Togoland and Dahomey. In the same year he was appointed a captain in the Gold Coast Volunteers. Russell was honourably discharged in 1912, at his own request, upon his departure from the Gold Coast for England. He died in a motoring accident, when his car collided with a pony trap driven by man under the influence of alcohol. The accident occurred outside of Chester, 24 July 1912, and the other driver was put on trial for manslaughter. Russell resided at Brock House, Tattenhall at the time. Sold with copied research.

[BESSIERES JEAN-BAPTISTE]: (1768-1813) Marshal of France, Duc d´ Istria. Killed in the battle field in Rippach, the day before the battle of Lutzen. An extremely interesting content letter, sent to Marshal Bessieres by Baron Jean-François Dudon (1778-1857), reporting in full detail about the loss of the city of Ciudad Rodrigo in Spain, close to the Portuguese border. A cleanly written letter with important historical content.  A.L.S., `Dudon´, two pages, folio, gilt edges, n.p. [Spain], 29th January 1812, to Marshal Bessieres, in French. The present letter being a copy of Dudon´s letter which was forwarded to Marshal Bessieres. Le General Barrie, Gouverneur, le commandant de la place, le Commandant d´artillerie, ont été tués, on s´est battu de rue en rue´ (Translation: "Your Excellency will learn from the newspapers of our successes, but no one will speak of our setbacks, our misfortunes and perhaps the Emperor himself is unaware of them. We lost Ciudad Rodrigo on the 19th of this month after three days of siege. The enemies followed the plan of attack of the French Army when we seized this city before entering Portugal; the breach had been very badly repaired, it was soon made passable. The garrison defended itself valiantly, although we were considerably diminished by desertion, especially on the part of the 113º, which was largely composed of Italians. General Barrie, Governor, the Commander of the place, the Commander of artillery, were killed, we fought street by street") Further wondering why the French Army has not reacted in time and indirectly accusing the officers leading the troops, saying `Les préparatifs des Anglais, la reunion de leur grosse artillerie a Almeida, leur marche et la prise de Ciudad Rodrigo, tout cela s´est fait avant que nous n´eussions fait avancer un bataillon. The preparations of the English, the assembly of their heavy artillery at Almeida, their march and the capture of Ciudad Rodrigo, all this was done before we had brought forward a battalion. Where does this apathy come from, is it carelessness in the service of the Emperor? No one in the army can be accused of this. Is it ignorance of the enemy's movements?... We were in Burgos, I decided to return immediately to Valladolid... Your Excellency knows all the delays and difficulties of a supply for Ciudad Rodrigo; my advice was badly received, it was decided that we would continue our way to Pamplona, and a few days later an aide-de-camp was sent to Paris to ask for my recall; the Prince of Neuchatel, without listening to me, made me give the order to go to the army of Portugal") Further again, saying `Les habitants du pays ne conçoivent pas comment une armée française a pu laisser prendre une place, sous ses yeux sans faire un movement. A peine arrive a Valladolid et informé de l´état des choses, M. le Duc de Raguse a voulu y porter remede, il n´était plus temps…´ (Translation: "The inhabitants of the country do not conceive how a French army could let take such place, under its eyes and without making a movement. The projects of English were not hidden, and the newspapers of December 8th from Galicia gave the details of them. As soon as he arrived in Valladolid and was informed of the state of things, the Duke of Ragusa wanted to remedy it, it was too late…") Si votre Excellence pouvait me faire rappeler de ce maudit pays…´ (Translation: "the city of Soria has been besieged by the insurgents under the command of the Count of Montijo, but they have lost many people there, and they have just returned back to Aranda, the Roguet Division is marching to bring aid to our troops at this city. In Navarre, Mina completely defeated General Abbé. He took 700 men & 2 cannons from us… If Your Excellency could bring me out of this damned country…") A letter of excellent content. With blank integral leaf, bearing a large and attractive circular waterwark showing a bust of Napoleon, with the text "Napoleon le Grand Empereur et Roi" ("Napoleon the Great Emperor and King"). Small professional repair to the spine, otherwise VG Provenance: the present letter originates from the Bessieres family archive. Jean-François Pierre Dudon (1778-1857), appointed baron of the Empire in 1808. He served in the military campaigns of Holland and the Rhine before being sent to the Spanish front. Prince of Neuchatel, Louis-Alexandre Berthier (1753-1815) Marshal of France Duc de Raguse, Auguste Marmont (1767-1847) Marshal of France.

Twain informs his wife of preparations to their home in anticipation of the arrival of former President Grant to Hartford –‘O, we’re going to be decorated sufficient, don’t you worry about that, Madam’  TWAIN MARK: (1835-1910) Samuel Langhorne Clemens. American writer and humourist. A fine, long A.L.S., Samuel, eight pages, 8vo, 'Study' [Hartford, Connecticut], n.d. ('Tuesday. P.M.', October 1880), to his wife, Olivia. Twain commences his letter in German, stating that he arrived at 7.15pm and continuing to inform his wife of the preparations being made at their house, 'Georg hat alles gethan wie du hast es befordert. - Also - eferydings else ist all und ganz gut gemacht' (Translation: 'George did everything as you requested. The hall carpets are lifted, the doors of the women's room and your bedroom are locked, the furniture is……removed. Oh no, I wasn't telling the truth: he didn't nail the cloth in front of the sideboard - Also - eferydings else is all very well done'), completing the remainder of the letter in English, writing, in part, 'I found Mr. Beals hard at work in the rain, with his decorations. With a ladder he had strung flags around our bedroom balcony & thence around to the porte cochere, which was elaborately flagged - thence all the flags of all nations were suspended from a line which stretched past the green house to the limit of our ground. Against each of the two trees on the mound half-way down to our gate stands a knight in complete armour. Piles of still bundled flags clutter up the ombra (to be put up) also gaudy shields of various shapes (arms of this & other countries); also some huge glittering arches & things, done in gold & silver paper, containing mottoes in big letters. I broke Mr. Beal's heart by persistently & inflexibly annulling & forbidding the biggest & gorgeousest of the arches - it had on it, in all the fines of the rainbow, “The Home of Mark Twain” in letters as big as your head. O, we're going to be decorated sufficient, don't you worry about that, Madam. At least I infer so, from what I have seen of Mr. Beals's hand & what he holds in reserve. I don't know but he is really going to decorate us too much. However, I'm letting him go on…..But wasn't it lucky that I arrived in time to bust up that Mark Twain business? I'm in the study…..& I've got a cheerful wood fire & four gas burners going…..It would be perfect if you were here to help me enjoy it, sweetheart….I hope you are reading & not half as lonesome as you were expecting to be' and concluding by referring to an important principle in the play of the cards during Bridge, 'I've been puzzling over it, and - but you better ask Whitmore, because I want to be certain about it - is it always second hand low, even when you haven't got a high card? - & if you do, what do you infer from it? Or do you infer at all, in that case? It being your partners turn to infer, likely. I wish I had brought the book along; several of those things are not clear to me'. Twain signs off the letter in an affectionate manner, 'Acres of love to you, my best & dearest, & love also to the kids, including Jean', and in a postscript returns to the decoration of their home, 'P.S. I'm going to get Mr. Beals to change that to God Bless Our Home. He said he would have to have a new motto; so that will do first rate for a novelty. It is to go over the front gate'. A letter of excellent content providing a superb glimpse of Mark Twain in his intimacy. VGOlivia Langdon Clemens (1845-1904) Wife of Samuel Langhorne Clemens from 1870. Livy, as she was known, assisted her husband with the editing of his books, articles and lectures and Twain once wrote of her “I am as proud of her brain as her beauty”. The couple had three daughters, including Jean who had been born in July 1880.The extensive decorations to their home which Twain makes reference to in the present letter were in preparation of the visit of former United States President Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) to Hartford on 16th October 1880. Grant was seeking the Republican presidential nomination for a third term and upon his train arriving in Hartford he found that 'the city was thronged with visitors…..and the streets were lined with decorations, not only along the line of march of the procession, but elsewhere'. Twain gave a welcoming address to Grant in which the writer declared 'Your country loves you. Your country is proud of you. Your country is grateful to you. Her applauses which have been thundering in your ears all these weeks and months, will never cease while the flag you saved continues to wave. Your country stands ready from this day forth to testify her measureless love and pride and gratitude toward you in every conceivable inexpensive way. Welcome to Hartford, great soldier, honoured statesman, unselfish citizen'.

William was markedly different to his Hanoverian predecessors in public perception: he was disciplined, eschewed decadence and was somewhat popular among his subjects. However, much like those who had come before him William resisted parliamentary reform and fought to keep control with the aristocracy and away from the Commons. This would be his downfall and in 1837 William died politically weakened and unpopular, leaving the crown to his 18-year-old niece, the soon-to-be-Queen Victoria.PLEASE NOTE: 6% Buyer Premium + VAT on this lot. (AGW=0.1155 oz.)Composition: 916.0/1000 Gold. The CoinThis is an extremely rare pattern issue by the great Richard Yeo in his prime. Only five examples, including this one, have traded publicly in the last two decades. This particularly delicate and well-proportioned bust exists on no other issue. This is also the joint finest graded example of this unique bust. The svelte slopes of neck, cheek and shoulder are so perfectly and subtly engraved, giving the impression of freshly pressed snow. A velvet lustre shimmers and dances over each curve breathing life into the regnal depiction. Flipping the coin over, a bold and precisely engraved royal shield meets the eye. This contrast perfectly complements each side of the coin, accenting both the softness of royal flesh and the cold strength of aristocracy. All of this boldly stands out against beautifully reflective fields of a subtle olive tone that under direct light erupts into a blazing yellow. Truly a world class example, having graced the Dangar Collection, Slaney Collection and British Collection. Befitting only of the cream of numismatic collectors. Richard Yeo (c.1720-79)Richard Yeo first came to prominence in 1746 upon his creation of the official medal for the Battle of Culloden. From 1749, he was assistant engraver at the Royal Mint under the great John Sigmund Tanner. In 1775, Yeo officially succeeded Tanner as Chief Engraver at the mint. However, as a result of Tanner’s failing eyesight and other health issues Yeo had been acting effectively as Chief Engraver since 1760 but without the appropriate pay. This was amended in 1768 when he was awarded £500 for past labours. Tanner designed and engraved British coinage as Chief until his death in 1779. Yeo was an extremely accomplished engraver producing several patterns and circulation issues throughout his career and his particularly fine style brought a delicate realism to coins of the period.Yeo was also a member of the Incorporated Society of Artists (1761-91) and founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts. He exhibited his works at the Academy in both 1769 and 1770. The Slaney CollectionThis coin was a member of the prestigious Slaney Collection – one of the most revered collections of British coinage ever assembled. For decades collectors had wondered where the cream of the numismatic crop liquidated in the 40s and 50s had disappeared to, only to find most of it in the Slaney Collection, which was sold by SPINK in two sales in May 2003 and May 2015. The collection sold for over £4 million; broke numerous sale records; is considered a milestone in British coinage; and ushered in a new era of serious growth in the market. (AGW=0.1237 oz.)Composition: 916.0/1000 Gold.Edge: MilledDesigner/engraver: John Croker (1670-1741)The CoinThe half guineas of George II are a series plagued with surface issues, with a large number of examples having been found in water and exhibiting related surface problems. This coin features no such issues and with just a handful of examples graded higher (undoubtedly including resubmissions) this is one of the best examples of the issue available to collectors. The coin has beautiful surfaces that glint and glimmer with a subtle, swirling lustre - extremely rare on these issues. The strike is good for the issue and Croker’s strong and characterful design exists here proudly. A world-class example of a problematic series.John Croker (1670-1741)Johann Croker, who later anglicised his name to John, was born in Dresden, Saxony in 1690. As a child, Croker lost his father, an accomplished cabinet maker, and was then taken under the wing of his goldsmith and jeweller godfather. The budding artist flourished under this apprenticeship and upon its completion made his way to England, via the Netherlands, where he worked as a jeweller and medallist until becoming an assistant to Henry Harris, Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint, in 1697 – not long after a not-yet-knighted Isaac Newton joined the mint as Warden. In 1705, the same year Mr Newton became Sir Isaac, Croker was appointed as Chief Engraver. Croker, working closely with Newton, engraved nearly all dies of Queen Anne, King George I, and many of George II. Few engravers have left as great an impact on British coinage as John Croker. In 1729, a 24-year-old John Sigmund Tanner (1705-75) was appointed his assistant. With Croker’s death in 1741, Tanner carried on the torch of Chief Engraver.PLEASE NOTE: 6% Buyer Premium + VAT on this lot. No other fees, including live bidding.
