†SAMUEL TONKISS (1909-1992) HEAD OF LAURENCE STEPHEN LOWRY, RA 1975 bronze, cast by the Morris Singer Foundry London in 1975, on serpentine base, signed TONKISS, foundry seal, serpentine base, 33cm h overall Provenance: anon sale in these 'rooms, 6 May 2009, lot 1002 to the present vendor. Samuel Tonkiss was born in Shropshire and moved to Todmorden in West Yorkshire where he worked as a journalist. In 1959 began to sculpt a series of portrait busts, some of which were cast in small editions. An earlier head of Lowry sculpted in 1971 is in the National Portrait Gallery, London. The present bust, being un-numbered, is extra to the edition of 36, cast in 1975. Tonkiss wrote two autobiographies, Just for the Record and Raking Amongst the Embers.++In good condition
A Goldscheider polychrome bust of a Moorish lady, late 19th century, the bust upon a raised and waisted plinth, and incised "Chavanne, D'impressed Reproduction Reservee", numbered 1361,32,18, the plinth further incised with an indecipherable signature Chow*n*, height 49 cm (repaired throughout) (see illustration).
A hand carved marble bust of a man, early 19th century, posed in the style of a Roman Emperor, with short wavy hair, his head turned to the right, his left shoulder bare, his right shoulder robed, unsigned. Height 50 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Generally the face is in good order but it does have a small graze to the right hand side of the tip of his nose and also the right hand side ridge of the nose. There is a small scratch to the lower part of the forehead. A small graze to the lobe of his left ear. There are very minor scuffs and grazes throughout, however, the damage which can be viewed on our website images is that the majority of his right shoulder is missing. This would represent fabulous value given the estimate.
A Thai cast bronze head of Buddha, 19th/20th century, wearing a floral headdress, mounted upon a square wood plinth, overall height 36 cm, the bust 25.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: There are traces of verdigris throughout. There is a small pinhead size dimple below the left eye. There are two small pinhead size holes to the rear of the head approx 5 cm apart from each other. There is no evidence of any deep or light surface scratches. Please look closely at the web images which may satisfy any doubts.

Sculpture: ▲ Tom Merrifield, Julius Bronze on pedestal stamped Tom Merrifield 180cm high , Acquired from the artist’s studio around 30 years ago., Tom Merrifield trained as a classical dancer and at the age of sixteen joined the Borovansky Ballet as a leading soloist. Three years later, he moved to Britain where he was principal dancer in a number of West End musicals including, On The Town, West Side Story, Man of La Mancha, No Strings and Showboat as well as appearing in numerous television productions. Following a distinguished and rewarding career as a dancer, Tom left the stage and took up drawing and sculpting as a full-time occupation. He has sculpted many of the world’s most famous dancers, including Agnes Oaks, Thomas Edur, Dame Alicia Markova, Dame Beryl Grey, Natalia Makarova, Dame Antoinette Sibley, Marguerite Porter, Eva Evdokimova, Galina Samsova, Marion Tait, Anton Dolin, John Gilpin, Sir Anthony Dowell, Ivan Nagy, Peter Schaufuss, Wayne Sleep, Ken Wells, the Olympic Skater John Curry and many more. Tom has exhibited and sold his work in London, Paris, New York, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Brussels, and Monte Carlo. Possibly the most challenging and poignant is the bust of Diana, Princess of Wales, commissioned after her death by the British Red Cross, as a tribute to a remarkable woman and her dedicated efforts to come to the aid of those in need. This work is displayed at the Red Cross headquarters in London. His work has also been recognized by the Royal Society of British Sculptors who elected him ARBS for Distinction in the Art of Sculpture.
