Irish School, 19th century, after Thomas Pope StevensPORTRAIT OF THE HONOURABLE MRS ALDWORTH, NÉEELIZABETH ST LEGER (1693-1775), FREEMASONWatercolour39.5 x 32cm;together with a 19th century bust length miniature of the same sitter 40 x 35mm, plaited hair to the reverse (2)Provenance: The Priory, Walsham-le-Willows.Elizabeth Aldworth (1693-1775), born Elizabeth St Leger, was the daughter of Arthur St Leger, 1st Viscount Doneraile, of Doneraile Court, County Cork, Ireland. She was known in her time as 'The Lady Freemason' and was the first recorded woman to be initiated into Regular Freemasonry. She married Richard Aldworth in 1713 in Newmarket.‘Whenever a benefit was given at the theatres in Dublin or Cork for the Masonic Female Orphan Asylum, she walked at the head of the Freemasons with her apron and other insignia of Freemasonary, and sat in the front row of the stage box. The house was always crowded on these occasions. Her portrait is in the lodge-room of almost every lodge of Ireland'. Lewistown Gazette, 16 February 1860, p.1 col.3.
