After the antique, a large terracotta bust of Hermes, on an integral socle, 57 cm x 39 cm, together with an associated marble column, 85 cm high.Private collection, from the estate of a large Oxfordshire country house.No major damage or repair. Some rubbing and minor losses to the surface in places (see images). Firing crack visible on the socle to the rear. Column appears good.

Evidence of a previous U-shape tear near the handkerchief in the breast pocket. Some overpainting to the white collar and in the hat. Slight previous paint loss to a tree in the background. Some gesso losses and wear to the frame commensurate with age.

This portrait exists in at least four published autograph variants by Gaulli: two half-length paintings (London, National Gallery, inv. no. NG6534, and Brianza, Valerio collection), one bust-length (sold Sotheby's, London, 10 July 1974, lot 32), and one three-quarter length, seated (Bucharest, Musée d'Art, inv. no. 8169/203) Condition Report: The canvas has been lined. Craquelure throughout but the paint surface appears stable, despite wearing thin in some places (including to the sitter's head). Rubbing and abrasions to the framing edges. Inspection under UV reveals light scattered retouching throughout, with a more concentrated area of overpaint to the background in the lower left quadrant, possibly covering an old repair.Condition Report Disclaimer
LOMBARD SCHOOL (19TH CENTURY) FAMILY PORTRAIT Oil on a photographic base 134.5 x 101.5cm (52¾ x 39¾ in.) Condition Report: UV light revels an evident restoration of about 20cm in hight and width, in a zig-zag formation, at the centre of the gentleman's bust. The extensive restoration covers a past tear in the canvas. Further smaller restorations are present on the head of the lady and her dress. Condition Report Disclaimer
JOHN HENNING (SCOTTISH, 1771-1851) - A PLASTER MEDALLION SELF-PORTRAIT In relief, bust length and right facing, housed in an ebonised circular frame measuring approx. 13.5cm in diameter, together with a copy of John Henning 1771-1851: "...a very ingenious Modeller" by John Malden (Renfrew District Council Museum & Art Galleries, 1977) and a series of B.M. Replica miniature panels from the Parthenon frieze, based on those famously modelled by Henning Condition Report:There is a hairline crack running vertically through the plaster medallion behind the head. A possible further hairline crack over the neck (this is very faint and may be only a surface scratch). There is wear to the portrait head in the raised areas, particularly the locks of hair above the ear and the brow. Light nicks to the surface in places. Frame is generally good, showing light wear commensurate with age.
