Lot 115

Circle of Sir Thomas Lawrence, PRA FRS,  British 1769-1830- Portrait of a lady, bust-length, with dark, curly hair; oil on canvas, oval, bears a 1922 exhibition label inscribed 'Hon. Mrs Wood / Melton Park / Portrait / Sir Thos. Lawrence...' attached to the central horizontal stretcher bar, 73 x 63 cm. Provenance:  Private Collection, UK. Note:  The present work, with its loose brushwork and unfinished appearance, shows similarities to a number of Sir Thomas Lawrence's portraits, including that of Elizabeth Thynne, Countess Cawdor, held in the National Galleries of Scotland [no.312096], and of the Countess of Darnley, in the Tate [no.N00324].  Here, the visible under-drawing is not dissimilar to the drawings Lawrence executed in preparation for his portraits, and it is possible that the present canvas was one of the many unfinished works that were left in Lawrence's studio after the artist's death in 1830, many of which were later reworked by other artists.

Lot 132

Attributed to Edwin Longsden Long, RA,  British 1829-1891- Portrait of a gentleman, possibly Lord Randolph Churchill, bust-length, wearing a ruff; oil on canvas, bears inscription 'E LONG 1829' on the upper horizontal stretcher bar, 51 x 40.6 cm., (unframed). Provenance:  with T. M. Wilson Antiques, Bath (as 'Spanish subject', circa 1860);  where purchased by the present owner in 1980. Note:  The present work bears resemblance to the artist's large scale portrait of Lord Randolph Churchill (1849-1895), completed in 1888 and housed in London's National Portrait Gallery [NPG 5113]. We are grateful to Mark Bills for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.

Lot 232

Alphonse Legros,  French / British 1837-1911- Portrait of a bearded man, bust-length, unfinished; oil on canvas, signed and dated '[?] Legros / 1872' (lower left), 53.2 x 43.1 cm., (unframed).  Provenance:  The Property of the Late Reverend John Watson. Note:  Legros studied under Horace Lecoq de Boisbaudran (1802-1897), and went on to develop a highly distinctive style, combining an archaic manner of composition and treatment of space with a Realist approach which was heavily informed by the work of Gustave Courbet (1819-1877). He was skilled as a portraitist, both in oils and print, with his sensitive studies effectively capturing the presence and character of his sitters. Legros was a particularly prominent printmaker, and is often cited as one of the leading figures in the British etching revival of the late 19th century. He taught etching at the South Kensington School of Art, before becoming Slade Professor at University College London, succeeding Edward Poynter (1836-1919) in the role. Over the course of his career he established friendships with James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) and Henri Fantin-Latour (1836-1904), with whom he formed the Société des Trois to confirm their mutual support.

Lot 241

George Richmond, RA,  British 1809-1896- Portrait of a man, bust-length; pencil, grey ink and wash on paper, signed 'G. Richmond.' (lower left), 19.8 x 14.3 cm. Provenance:  The Property of the Late Reverend John Watson. Note:  Richmond was a member of 'The Ancients', a group which was inspired by the artistic output of William Blake (1757-1827). He worked largely as a portraitist, producing likenesses of many of the most prominent figures of the 19th century, including Charlotte Brontë (1816-1855), Michael Faraday (1791-1867), George Gilbert Scott (1811-1878), and Queen Adelaide (1791-1849).

Lot 282

Charles Buchel,  British 1872-1950- Portrait of a lady in profile, bust-length, wearing a beaded necklace; charcoal and pastel heightened with scratching out on paper, signed and dated 'CHAS . A . BUCHEL / 1907' (lower left), 42.2 x 31.8 cm. Provenance:  Private Collection, UK. Note:  Buchel studied at the Royal Academy Schools, before being hired by the actor-manager Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree (1852-1917), with whom he worked for sixteen years, in 1898. In this role, Buchel produced a number of theatrical programmes and posters, alongside painting portraits of some of the most important performers of the day, including Lillie Langtry (1853-1929) and Henry Irving (1838-1905).  The present work is a striking example of Buchel's highly sensitive portraits, powerfully conveying a sense of a the sitter's character and presence, whilst also suggesting that her attention is elsewhere, as she gazes absent-mindedly away from the viewer.

Lot 36

Follower of Sir Peter Lely,  English / Dutch 1618-1680- Portrait of Lady Anne Sackville, Countess of Home, bust-length, wearing a gold dress; oil on canvas, 38.5 x 30.1 cm. Provenance:  Anon. sale, Bonhams, Knightsbridge, 15 April 2021, lot 129.  Private Collection, UK. Note:  The present work is an early copy after a portrait of Lady Anne Sackville, painted c.1670, which hangs at Knole House in Kent [no.129832]. Lady Anne Sackville was the daughter of Richard Sackville, 5th Earl of Dorset. She married Alexander Home, 4th Earl of Home, son of James Home, 3rd Earl of Home and Lady Jean Douglas, in 1671.

Lot 38

Attributed to Francis Bindon,  Irish c.1690-1765-  Portrait of a gentleman, bust-length, wearing a brown coat and grey powdered wig, in a feigned oval; oil on canvas, bears an old label inscribed 'Bindon' on the lower rail of the frame recto (left), bears part of an old, indistinctly inscribed label on the reverse of the frame, 75.8 x 63.1 cm. Provenance:  Private Collection, UK. Note:  Bindon was a successful portrait painter in 18th-century Ireland, whose sitters included Jonathan Swift (1667-1745), Thomas Sheridan (1719-1788), and the blind harpist Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738). Relatively little is known of his life, but he is recorded as having studied art and architecture at Padua University in 1716 during his Grand Tour, and subsequently at Godfrey Kneller's (1646-1723) academy in London.

Lot 41

Attributed to Richard van Bleeck,  Dutch c.1670-c.1733- Portrait of a gentleman, bust-length, wearing a brown coat; oil on canvas, in a feigned oval, 76 x 61 cm. Provenance:  Cider House Galleries, Bletchingley.  Private Collection, UK. Note:  Van Bleeck studied under Theodor van der Schuer (1634-1707) and Daniel Haringh (1636-1713), before leaving for London in 1695. He returned to the Netherlands in 1705, producing a celebrated portrait of the still-life painter Coenraet Roepel (1678-1748), which sold for £13,000 at Christie's, London, 7 July 2004 (lot 38). Van Bleeck was back in London by 1715, when he painted a portrait of the playwright and poet William Congreve (1670-1729), and thereafter established a successful portrait practice in the city, mainly among prominent Roman Catholic families.

Lot 6

Circle of Francesco Furini,  Italian 1603-1646- Portrait of a young woman, head and shoulders, adorned with pearls; oil on canvas fragment, bears ink stamp for the National Gallery of Prague 'Narodni Galerie, vývoz' ('National Gallery, export') verso, 40.5 x 41.5 cm., (unframed). Provenance:  Private Collection, UK. Note: Francesco Furini and his Roman followers were renowned for their bust-length, sensuous depictions of young women, often painted on a small scale as commissions for private clients. An example of this style of portraiture by Furini, which, like the present lot, shows a young woman adorned with pearls, is in the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna [no.GG 5785].

Lot 83

Henry Ryland,  British 1856-1924- Portrait of a lady in profile, bust-length, wearing classical dress; pencil on paper, signed 'H RYLAND' (lower right), 35.7 x 26 cm. Provenance:  with J.S. Maas & Son Ltd., London.  Private Collection, UK. Note:  Ryland studied under Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant (1845-1902), Gustave Boulanger (1824-1888), and Jules Joseph Lefebvre (1836-1911) in Paris, and also at the South Kensington Art School and Heatherley's in London. The Neo-Classical approach of figures such as Lefebvre and Benjamin-Constant clearly had a strong influence of Ryland's own work, as did artists like Puvis de Chavannes (1824-1898) and Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912). Ryland's output consisted largely of watercolours and drawings depicting dreamy female sitters with strong features, often in imagined classical settings and costume, just like in the present work.
