***Frederick Thomas Daws (1878-1955) - Painted plaster bust - "Mok the Western Lowland Gorilla", 23.5ins x 18.5ins overall Note: Mok and his companion Moina resided at London Zoo from 1932 until 1938. Leeds Museums and Galleries acquired Mok's taxidermied skin and skeleton and put his remains on display in July 1938Note: Daws Collection - Frederick Thomas Daws (1878-1955) was a noted artist and sculptor. In the course of a distinguished career Daws exhibited many times at the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon. He worked extensively in this country and on the Continent, the USA and India.His patrons included Queen Alexandra, Queen Amelie of Portugal, and the Maharajah Shum Shere Jung of Nepal. He was also commissioned by the RAF to paint a lifesize portrait of the late King George V. Daws also worked at the Doulton Burslem factory and from 1913 into the 1920s accurate depictions of pedigree dogs were modelled by him. In 1930 he became the main artist at the Royal Doulton works for their champion dogs. Victorian brass inlaid rosewood portable writing desk with 2 brass covered wells and secret panel enclosing drawers, W.50.5cm; smaller walnut writing desk, W.30.2cm, (both with faults); mahogany tambour desk stand, W.22.6cm; plaster bust of Dantes, W.24.2cm, and a plaster head, H.26.5cm, by D Brocciani & Co. London, (both a/f). (5)Condition: Brass lifting in places, 3 pieces detached but the bits appear to be all there (some faulty restoration to decorative brass, see image). Secret locking mechanism part missing, left interior catch to writing slope missing.
