That same year in the bi-monthly magazine Antichita Viva, the present lot featured in the section which highlighted the most important artworks to have been offered at auctions in Florence. The footnote on this occasion mentioned that the bust was one of the 'last Viscounts of Cislago.'Cesare II, third Marquis of Cislago was son of Tebaldo (Milan, 1601-1674). When Cesare II died in 1716 the Cislago banch of the Visconti family died out too and the title was inherited by Carlo Francesco Ercole Castelbarco Visconti. This would possibly therefore explain why in 1973 in the Sotheby's sale in Florence, Count Francesco Castelbarco Albani did not know the identity of the subject. Cesare II succeeded his father in 1674 and it is possible that he commissioned a marble bust to commemorate his rise to power. He was born in 1643 meaning that he would have been in his mid thirties when the bust was completed.Rusnati was born in 1647, probably in Gallarte and completed his training in Rome between 1671 and 1673. When he returned to Milan he faced the financial crisis that affected the Fabbrica del Duomo. As such it was only in 1678 that he completed his first statue for the prominent Cathedral of Florence. If Rusnati worked outside of Milan it is very possible that Cesare Visconti would have chosen him to carry out the commission of the self portrait. In fact, the Viscounts of Cislago were lords of Gallarte, the place thought to be where Rusnati was born. In addition when one considers that Rusnati would have just returned from his training in Rome, he must have been an attractive candidate since he would have been well versed in the latest portrait artists such as Bernini. Although no portraits created by Rusnati were initially thought to have survived, closer examination of the sculptors works of a sacred nature mean that stylistic parallels can be drawn. The drapery, for example, can be seen in the terracotta model for a statue of David which was intended for the Cathedral in Milan. A large German walnut schrank or wardrobeEarly 18th century but apparently with some later elements and/or timbersThe stepped and shaped top with an ogee and cavetto moulded cornice centred by a scrolled acanthus, floral, foliate swagged and eagle carved cresting with a central coat of arms-embedded cartouche held aloft by a pair of opposing cherubs above the date: '1634', surmounted by a coronet, over a pair of shaped raised moulded panelled doors with re-entrant angles and shaped spandrels, each carved with an allegorical figure, interspersed by cherub mask headed Corinthian pilasters each carved in relief with ribbon tied and tasselled putti, entwined berried foliage and flowerhead carved pendant, with two deep raised moulded panelled drawers below, interspersed by three moulded relief carved putto tablets, on massive octagonal baluster shaped supports, the reverse of the doors inlaid with six engraved ivory tablets variously depicting crests, coats of arms and a bust of 'Johannes Casimirus', approximately: 262cm wide x 110cm deep x 267cm high, (103in wide x 43in deep x 105in high)Footnotes:A very similar North German schrank to the offered lot, one evidently made in Lubeck, sold Christie's, London, Fine European Furniture, Tapestries and Carpets, 25 March 1999, lot 183. Carpeaux writes ‘J'ai conserve un si bon souvenir des rapports que j'ai eu avec vous, et chez Mr. Duret, et pendant que je fesais le buste de Mlle. Poire (?), pour hesiter a venir vous demander de me faire le plaisir, de m'indiquer le moyen d'obtenir une loge, pour une des premieres representations de la nouvelle feerie. Je sais combien elle a de succes et la difficulte qu'on aura.......Je compte donc sur vous et je vous adresse d'avance tous mes remerciements’ (Translation: ‘I have preserved such good memories of the relations I had with you, and at Mr. Duret’s, and while I was doing the bust of Mlle. Poire (?), to hesitate to come and ask you to do me the favour, to tell me how to obtain a box, for one of the first performances of the new fairy tale. I know how successful it is and the difficulty we will have…….I am therefore counting on you and I send you all my thanks in advance’). Some light overall age wear and a minor trace of former mounting to the upper left edge of the recto. About VG Francisque Joseph Duret (1804-1865) French sculptor, a professor at l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts where his students included Carpeaux.
NAPOLEON I: (1769-1821) Emperor of France 1804-14, 1815. A good L.S., `Np´, one page, 4to, Valladolid, 16th January 1809, in French. Napoleon signs to the left border of the letter beneath an order annotation saying `Renvoyé au Maréchal Bessieres, pour rendre compte´ (Translation “Sent back to Marshal Bessieres to report about this”), the letter being a carefully hand written demand addressed to the Emperor and sent by Captain of the Grenadiers of the Emperor´s Guard, Luneau, stating in part `A Sa Majesté, l´Empereur des Français, Roi d´Italie, Sire, j´ose solliciter de la bienveillance de votre Auguste Majesté Impériale, la decoration d´officier de la légion d´honneur. Dix-huit ans de services distingués, dont quatorze dans le grade d´adjudant-major et de capitaine de grenadiers; seize campagnes, notamment celle de Marengo où je reçus une blessure; celles d´Olin, d´Austerlitz, d´Iena, d´Eylan et de Friedland, tells sont Sire, les titres qui parlent en ma faveur…´ (Translation: “To His Majesty, the Emperor of the French, King of Italy, Sire, I dare to ask for the kindness of Your August Imperial Majesty, the decoration of officer of the Legion d´Honneur. Eighteen years of distinguished service, including fourteen in the rank of Adjutant-Major and Grenadier Captain; sixteen campaigns, notably that of Marengo where I received a wound; those of Olin, Austerlitz, Jena, Eylan and Friedland, such are, Sire, the titles which speak in my favour…”) The letter bears two very attractive circular watermarks, the first showing a bust of Napoleon, with the printed text around stating “Napoleon Empereur des Français – Roi d´Italie” and to the second page bearing a crowned eagle.
