During the early hours of March 12, 1879 on the bank of the River Intombe, a huge force of Zulus launched a surprise attack, immediately overrunning the British camped there and slaughtering most of the soldiers before they had time to fire a shot. Booth assumed command and, with one or two subordinates, covered the retreat of the 40 or so survivors, hotly pursued by the victorious Zulus over the astonishing distance of 3 miles. His Victoria Cross was presented by his descendants to the Staffordshire Regimental Museum in the early 20th century, the family retaining the items now offered for sale. ++++
