John Bailey (act. 1851-1857)/Marble Bust of Lieutenant-General Duncan McLeod on a plinth, inscribed on base 'I Bailey Sculpt PADDINGTON 1853', the bust 81cm high, the plinth 112cm high/Note: Lieutenant-General Duncan McLeod (c.1780-1856) of the Bengal Engineers was a skilled engineer responsible for the building of numerous roads and bridges during his years of service. His crowning achievement was the Italianate style Moorshedabad Palace (also known as Nizamat Kila (the Fortress of the Nawabs) or the Hazaarduari Palace (Palace of a Thousand Doors)) 1829-1837/see illustration Condition Report: Lot 174: Bust in good condition, just some light surface dirt. Plinth has bad chipping/losses to the rim at the top and some old restoration. This will need professional restoration.
William Brodie (Scottish 1815 - 1881)/Bust of a Young Child/possibly the artist's daughter/signed W Brodie RSA Sc1879/white marble, 36.5cm high/Note: In 1880 Brodie exhibited a bust of his daughter at The Royal Scottish Academy, the present lot could be the one exhibited. MANNER OF SIR ANTHONY VAN DYCK (1599-1641) PORTRAIT OF A MAN, POSSIBLY JAN VAN DER WOUWER, LAWYER AND PHILOLOGIST Bust length, wearing a fur coat, oil on canvas laid on board 27.5 x 20cm. * Possibly derived from (though not a copy of) Van Dyck's portrait of 1632 (Pushkin Museum, Moscow). An earlier etching by Van Dyck also depicts the sitter in a different pose. ++ Some old scattered retouching; worn at edges
THOMAS CAMPBELL (1790-1858) Bust of a Youth, signed Thos Campbell, Ff Romae, 1823. to the reverse, white marble, height 51.5cm; together with a mahogany stand (2) Footnote: Thomas Campbell was born in Edinburgh. In 1818 he travelled to Rome, supported by his patron Gilbert Innes, where he set up studio and became associated with other sculptors such as Canova. He returned to London in around 1830 where he set up his studio in Leicester Square. It is believed, by family repute, that the subject of this lot is Christie Falconer.
A Queen Victoria 1887 Golden Jubilee cased silver medal, designed by Sir J E Boehm and Frederick, Lord Leighton, engraved by L C Wyon, decorated with a crowned and veiled bust of Victoria and the other side an enthroned figure representing the British Empire with a hand on the Sword of Justice, surrounded by seven figures representing the Arts, Commerce and Industry, diameter 3ins, together with a cased South African bronze Art Medals, The Peace Treaty for the South African War, 1902, by Emil Fuchs for Messrs Elkington & Co, with Britannia standing at a harbour, with her sword, behind her a column of troops boarding ships for home to one side, the other with angel with laurel branch attends to fallen soldier, To The Memory of Those Who Gave Their Lives For Queen and Country, and South African Campaign 1899 - 1900
