A French patinated bronze bust of Jean Racine (1639-1699), late 18th/early 19th century, portrayed looking slightly to dexter, on a stepped gilt metal and variegated grey marble socle, 21.5cm high overall Provenance: The collection of the late Professor Michael Jaffé, Clifton Maybank This bust likely depicts dramatist and intellectual Jean Racine. Racine primarily wrote tragedies, and is considered to be one of the three great playwrights of 17th century France, along with Moliere and Corneille. This model has once or twice appeared on the market alongside a companion bust of Moliere. The bronze might be loosely inspired by a bust of Racine by Louis-Simon Boizot, in the collection of the Walters Museum, Baltimore.
