English School, follower of Hans Eworth (c.1520-1574) Portrait of a young lady, reputedly Queen Elizabeth I, three-quarter length, wearing a French cap, a ruff, brocaded gown and an ermine trimmed overcoat Oil on panel, 95.5cm by 65cm See illustration The painting bears similarities to the bust length painting of Queen Elizabeth I held by the National Portrait Gallery and the ''Clopton Portrait'' (of which there are extant versions) and which date from the 1560's. There are notable differences however; including the handling of the brushwork, the length of the portrait, positioning of the hands, costume variances and the omission of the large square cut jewel worn on a double chain known as ''The Mirror of France'' which had belonged to King Henry VIII, her father. Portraits of this type date from the early part of her reign, before the use of complicated imagery associated with later renditions.
