* Clothing. A printed nursing gown, circa 1835, cotton gown printed with small geometric pattern in blue, red, and brown, high-waisted gathered bodice with two nursing slits with buttonholes (now loosely stitched up), metal hooks and eyes to rear, and large shaped collar, long leg o' mutton sleeves with double fitted cuffs (metal eyes present, but no hooks), partially lined close-gathered skirt with inserted muslin pocket on left-hand side, collar and sleeves edged with cream piping and narrow lace, some minor brown staining to one part of collar and to underarms, bust 74 cm (29 ins), waist 56 cm (22 ins), sleeves 67 cm (26.5 ins), length at front 140 cm (55 ins) and at back 131 cm (51.5 ins)QTY: (1)NOTE:Rare early maternity gown, surviving in very good condition, with slits in the pleated bodice for nursing and a skirt which is longer at the front, to accommodate the growing abdomen. Before the mass production of clothing, garments solely for maternity wear were deemed an unnecessary expense. Instead, dresses were altered and adapted during pregnancy, or made to be easily altered afterwards. Here the pleated bodice allows for the slits to be concealed post-pregnancy, and the skirt length could easily be shortened at the front to match the back. Dresses such as this, therefore, rarely survive in their original state. The V&A has a nursing gown in its collection of a similar date to ours (accession number T.52-2015).

Head of an Apostle, circa 1700, oil on canvas, head and shoulders portrait of a bearded older man wearing a heavy coat, face in half-profile to the left, areas of craquelure, very small chip (5 x 4 mm) to paint surface at top of head, heavily varnished, re-lined, canvas size 55.5 x 45.5 cm (22 x 18 ins), later gilt frame with framer’s label to verso (69 x 57 cm)QTY: (1)NOTE:A painter of the late Baroque, Petr Brandl was famous in his lifetime, but due to isolation behind the Iron Curtain rather forgotten until recently. A major collection of his work is held in the National Gallery of Prague, and the gallery is currently holding a major exhibition of Brandl’s work, Petr Brandl: The Story of a Bohemian. His work often employs strong chiaroscuro, areas of heavy impasto and very plastic as well as dramatic figures; he often modelled figures in clay before committing to canvas. The Head of an Apostle is typical of Brandl’s work - a full beard and a lined face, accentuated with the help of thick layers of paints, applied with energetic brushstrokes that help to capture the strong use of chiaroscuro.He painted numerous similar portraits of Apostles and Evangelists, including The Apostle Paul (National Gallery of Prague ascension number O 557), Simeon with the Infant Jesus (O 578), and Bust of a Discoursing Apostle (O 12889), all held in the collection of the National Gallery of Prague.The Apostle Paul is illustrated in Guide to the Picture Gallery of Prague Castle by Jaromir Neumann, number 65, page 67.We are grateful to Sir Timothy Clifford for the attribution and note for this lot.

Victorian Royal Navy Officers Mess plate. A scarce mid 19th century example decorated with a dramatic blue and white transfer border depicting a naval battle scene. A British frigate fires, while two Jack Tars wave flags vigorously standing upon a cannon. This design is repeated three times to the border and is interspersed with a head and shoulder bust of the young Queen Victoria within a wreath of laurels and oak leaves denoting Strength and Victory. To the centre a large crown with the word “Mess†above and “4†below. This is within a chain of interlocked links. Colours remain vivid and transfer clear. Circa 1850. SMILE (2022) - Monster's Facial Appliances and Eyeballs - Monster's facial appliances and eyeballs from Parker Finn's Smile. When Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) visited her childhood home, the monstrous entity approached her as her mother before it revealed itself as a semi-humanoid with malformed jaws. This lot consists of a latex foam facial appliance on a styrofoam bust; a latex foam nose appliance on a white plastic facial bust marked "Test"; eight clear silicone eye skins; and six black and purple resin eyeballs. SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY (2018) - Mudtrooper Half-Mask Respirator - A Mudtrooper half-mask respirator from Ron Howard's Solo: A Star Wars Story. Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) and his fellow Mudtroopers, also known as Swamp Troopers for their swamp-friendly gear, wore their half-masks while enforcing Imperial order on the swamp planet Mimban.This molded rubber half-mask is airbrushed green with nonfunctional silver-color respirators on either side, "RT MT Mask" engraved on the interior, metal and rubber mesh grating glued to the front, and cream-color nylon cinching straps slotted through the top. The mask comes pinned to a foam bust mounted to a display base labeled "Star Wars Mudtrooper." I LOVE LUCY (1951-1957) - Lucy Ricardo's (Lucille Ball) Photo-Matched Master Dress and Dickie - Lucy Ricardo's (Lucille Ball) photo-matched master dress and dickie from the television series I Love Lucy. Lucy wore a variety of similar polka-dot dresses throughout the show, such as in Season 3 Episode 2, "The Girls Go Into Business." This particular dress served as a master dress, from which Ricardo's iconic dresses were made, and photo-matches to a bust image of Ball making one of her signature expressions.Designed by Elois Jenssen, from whose estate it originates, this navy blue and white polka dot print silk satin dress is lined with black cotton satin and built-in shoulder pads, as well as navy blue plastic gem-cut nonfunctional buttons and white cotton cuffed sleeves. It also has a pleated white cotton and nylon dickie with faux pearl nonfunctional buttons, a rounded flat collar, an attached faux flower, and snap closures. Notably, the neckline of the dress was designed with a distinctive scoop to allow for easy costume transition and preserve Ball's makeup. The interior of the dress features Elois Jenssen's maker's label. Serleena (Lara Flynn Boyle) freed Pineal Eye from MIB HQ in exchange for his help locating the Light of Zartha. Created by alien makeup effects artist Rick Baker's Cinovation Studios, this foam bust is affixed with a foam latex cowl hand-painted brown and pink, inset with a plastic third eye, and dressed with segments of a red leatherette overcoat and black cotton shirt. A production tag on the overcoat is hand-marked "3rd Eye Guy" with demolding date "6.22.01." It exhibits peeling latex on the chin, brow, and third eye. BATMAN (1989) - Production-Made Batman (Michael Keaton) Cowl - A Batman (Michael Keaton) cowl from the production of Tim Burton's Batman. Bruce Wayne wore his signature cowl throughout the film, donning it whenever he fought crime on the streets of Gotham City as Batman, including when he ultimately defeated the villainous Joker (Jack Nicholson).Conceived by costume designer Bob Ringwood and sculpted specifically for Keaton by Vin Burnham, this style of cowl was worn by the Caped Crusader throughout the film, with this particular lot made by production but ultimately never completed.
