Lot 6

A small gold-mounted glass pendant with cristallo-ceramie portrait of Napoleon Bonapartecirca 1802-03The portrait possibly by Desprez and mounted by William Harris, the bust portrait depicting the Emperor as First Consul, to dexter, inscribed BONAPARTE, on a cream backing, inscribed HARRIS to the interior of the glass, within an oval gold case and suspension loop, the red leather velvet-lined and silk case with paper label on the interior, inscribed Harris Gem and Seal Engraver PALL MALL No.22 4.5cm by 3.6cmFootnotes:William Harris was a London medal engraver in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Examples of his work have been sold at auction in recent years. Although sulphides or cristallo-ceramie are attributed largely to Apsley Pellatt in England from 1819 and later to the paperweight factories of France, it is believed that Desprez, an artist about whom unfortunately very little is known, had mastered the technique of incrustation during the reign of Napoleon, and did so with a perfection that his contemporaries or his successors seldom achieved. It has been suggested that this pendant relates to the Peace of Amiens in 1802, the portrait depicting Napoleon as First Consul. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 4

Andrea Appiani (Milan 1754-1817)Portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte, bust length, in profile Signed 'A Appiani' Dedic. 'Dal vero a SELa Comtesse Hartig/Marchessa J De...'pencil, black and white chalk on tanned paper20.5 x 18cm Footnotes:Provenance:The von Hartig familyThe present portrait is believed to have been drawn from life by Andrea Appiani, whose close association with Napoleon was of paramount importance. In 1796 on the entry of the French General into Milan, Appiani made a celebrated pencil portrait of him (now in the Brera, Milan), which won him the favour of Napoleon and numerous commissions within the Cisalpine Republic. Appiani also designed many medals and the headings for official papers and was put in charge of choosing the works of art to be requisitioned and sent to France. In 1801 the artist was sent to the Assembly at Lyons and also travelled to Paris, where he made numerous portraits of members of the Bonaparte family. The present portrait is believed to be very close to the artist's drawing of Eugène de Beauharnais, Napoleon's stepson, in the Museo Correr in Venice. After returning to Milan in 1803 he painted the celebrated portraits of Napoleon and Francesco Melzi (both in the Villa Melzi-d'Eril in Bellagio) and in the same year he began work on the Fasti di Napoleone, a series of 35 monochrome canvases for the Sala delle Cariatidi in the Palazzo Reale, in Milan, which he completed in 1807 (now destroyed, but engraved under the supervision of Appiani himself and the direction of Giuseppe Longhi). His further decorations in the state rooms of the Palazzo Reale were notable and, while also largely destroyed in 1943, his Apotheosis of the Emperor Napoleon on the vault of the Sala di Trono survives. In 1804 Appiani went to Paris for the Emperor's coronation and in 1805 he painted the portrait of Napoleon, King of Italy (now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna).Along with the sculptor, Antonio Canova, Appiani was arguably the chief exponent of Italian Neo-classical art, valued for his impeccable technique and superb handling, whether in drawings, oil paintings, or frescoes. His particular style, which displayed a delicate gradation of tone was inspired by Correggio and by the school of Leonardo and marks his works apart from the severe and statuesque manner of Jacques-Louis David. The effects of softness and luminosity so apparent in his drawings are also found in his paintings, which appear to have been equally executed with the same extraordinary facility and grace. Heinrich von Bellegarde (1756 – 1845), whose mother was a Countess von Hartig, entered into Austria's service in 1778 and served with distinction during the campaigns between 1793 and 1795. In 1796, following these campaigns, he was made Feldmarschallleutnant and chief of military staff to Archduke Charles. The following year, he negotiated the Treaty of Leoben, the preliminary accord to the Treaty of Campo Formio, with Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1799, he was made commander of a corps in eastern Switzerland which was to ensure communication between the armies of Souvarov and Archduke Charles. In 1806, he was named Feldmarschall and civil and military governor of Gallacia. During the 1809 campaign, he commanded the first corps of the Austrian army, under Archduke Charles. He distinguished himself at Essling (21-22 May) and Wagram (5-6 July). Following the Treaty of Schönbrunn in 1809, he once again became governor of Gallicia but was often called to preside over meetings of the Aulic Council. In 1813, he was called to lead the Austrian army in Italy and in 1814, he concluded the armistice with Eugène de Beauharnais. Between 1814 and 1815, he was governor of Lombardy and Venetia. During this time, he came up against Murat at the banks of the river Po and defeated him at Occhiobello and Casaglia in 1815. In 1816, Bellegarde spent some time in Paris, but was soon recalled to again preside over the Aulic Council, a post which he held until 1825.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Alfred-Guillaume-Gabriel, Comte D'Orsay (French, 1801-1852): A bronze equestrian portrait of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of WellingtonDepicted on his favourite charger 'Hanover' wearing a plumed bicorne and holding a telescope in his right hand, his sheathed sword to his left side, on rectangular naturalistic base, the base signed to one side and to the underside of the horse COMTE D'ORSAY SCULPT. 1848, the opposing side of the base inscribed and numbered T.W. No 17, raised on a contemporary black marble rectangular plinth, 44.5cm high approximately overallFootnotes:The Comte d'Orsay studied sculpture in Florence and Paris before arriving in London in 1823. Known as a flamboyant dandy, he mixed in aristocratic circles and enjoyed success as a both a painter and sculptor in Paris and London, exhibiting at the Royal Academy throughout the 1840's and also at the Paris Salon from 1845. He was nominated as the Director of the Beaux-Arts in 1852 by Louis-Napoleon and exhibited his bronze equestrian statue of Napoleon in 1849 at the Paris Salon. The sculptor was apparently particularly proud of the present equestrian statuette which caused a stir in London and greatly pleased the Duke. He also produced a bust of the Duke which was reproduced in Parian ware as well as painting a portrait of Wellington which was apparently one of his favourite depictions and which is now in the National Portrait Gallery.A large edition of this model inscribed 'PRESENTED TO LADY ELIZABETH MARCHIONESS OF DOURO ON THE 18TH JUNE 1852 BY FIELD MARSHAL ARTHUR DUKE OF WELLINGTON' was sold at Sotheby's, London, May 29, 2008, lot 20.Literature: P. Lot 11

A very rare Paris, Dihl et Guérhard, biscuit porcelain bust of Napoleon Bonaparte (French, 1781–ca. 1824) as First Consul, circa 1800Naturalistically modelled, the front incised BONAPARTE., on its original porcelain base imitating tortoiseshell and decorated with a classical gilt border of anthemions, 40cm high incised 'Mf de Dihl / & Guerhard'Footnotes:This extremely rare biscuit, with its original base, is probably the only representation of Bonaparte by the 'Dihl et Guérhard' manufactory to have been rendered in the form of a bust. It was undoubtedly an imperial order, particularly since the only other example that we know of is on display at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art (incomplete, without its base), accession no. 1991.209.'Dihl et Guérhard' was without a doubt the most prestigious of all the Parisian porcelain manufactories. Founded in 1781 under the Ancien Régime, the company reached its zenith under the Consulate and the Empire, before falling into decline and shutting down under the Restoration in 1823. It was renowned for its sophisticated decoration and the virtuosity of its craftsmen. From 1811 to 1813, they crafted a porcelain dinner service for the Empress Josephine that ranks among the most lavish ever made – and probably one of the most expensive as well, at the colossal price of 46,976 francs in total. Under the protection and patronage of Louis-Antoine Duc d'Angoulême Guérhard and Dihl opened a hard-paste porcelain factory, in 1781, in the Rue de Bondy. Dihl, a man of broad scientific attainments, is credited with being the first to establish a complete palette of colours that could be used for the decoration of hard-paste porcelain. This factory successfully reproduced all the underglaze coloured grounds used at Sèvres and all the colours for over-glaze painting. In addition to tableware, vases and ornaments of exquisite quality, enriched with the most elaborate decoration, a great quantity of excellent biscuit pieces were produced. In 1797 Christophe Dihl married in 1797 Antoine Guérhard's widow, and together they continued running the factory. In spite of the manufactory's triumph at the 1806 Paris International Exhibition and its important customers, the factory began to decline. In 1812 Mrs. Dihl travelled to London to try and sell several cases of porcelain, probably the 184 lots put into an auction by Christie's in 1813. The factory managed to survive, thanks to private loans, several mortgages and due to prestigious orders such as the service for Empress Joséphine (1811-1813). However, eventually the factory had to close down. Dihl died on 12 February 1830 and Madame Dihl on 10 July 1831, at the age of eighty and financially ruined. Two public sales were organized in 1830 and in 1831 and all remaining works sold. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

English School, 19th CenturyPortrait of Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey (1768-1854), bust-length and wearing the Order of Saint George and the Star of the Order of the Garteroil on canvas93.7 x 73cm Footnotes:Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey (1768-1854), styled Lord Paget between 1784 and 1812 and known as the Earl of Uxbridge between 1812 and 1815, was a British Army officer and politician. After serving as a Member of Parliament for Caernarvon and then for Milborne Port, he took part in the Flanders Campaign and then commanded the cavalry for Sir John Moore's army in Spain during the Peninsular War. His cavalry showed greater superiority over their French counterparts at the Battle of Sahagún and at the Battle of Benavente, where he defeated the elite chasseurs of the French Imperial Guard. During the Hundred Days he led the charge of the heavy cavalry against Comte d'Erlon's column at the Battle of Waterloo. At the end of the battle he famously lost part of one leg to a cannonball. According to anecdote, he was close to Wellington when his leg was hit, and exclaimed, 'By God, sir, I've lost my leg!' — to which Wellington replied, 'By God, sir, so you have!'. According to his aide-de-camp, Thomas Wildman, during the amputation Paget smiled and said, 'I have had a pretty long run. I have been a beau these 47 years and it would not be fair to cut the young men out any longer.' In later life he served twice as Master-General of the Ordnance and twice as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

After Antoine-Denis Chaudet (1763-1810): A first half 19th century bronze bust of Napoleon together with a later veined rouge marble pedestalThe bust cast after 1812, the pedestal, probably late 19th / early 20th century The sitter modelled full face, a cross belt and military ornaments to his bare chest and shoulders, on integral herm base, mid to dark brown patination, the bust, 60cm, 29cm wide, 24cm deep, the pedestal, 120cm high, 35cm wide, 30cm deep overall (2)Footnotes:Provenance:The bust formerly the property of Victor Napoleon and Princess Clementine of Belgium.Thence by descent, sold Osenat, Paris, 24 March 2013, lot 79.Acquired by the present vendor in the mid 2010's along with the marble pedestal offered with this lot.The offered bronze bust is a rare cast bronze edition of a clothed variant derived from an original plainer plaster by Chaudet, arguably depicting France's most famous and influential historical figure in the guise of a Roman dignitary. In the earlier bust, dating from 1799, Chaudet depicts Napoleon with his plain shoulders tapering to a classically inspired 'herm' form base. A marble version of this bust was completed by Chaudet in 1804 and further copies were subsequently made in quantity in Carrara marble between circa 1807 and 1809. Ordered by Napoleon's sister Elisa Baciocchi, who had been presented the principality of Lucca and Massa Carrara by her brother to be displayed in public buildings, the number of these bust made was estimated to be in the region of approximately 1200 although many of these marbles were subsequently destroyed after Napoleon's defeat. From 1805, copies of this same bust in three sizes were also famously made in Sevres biscuit porcelain. The present lot is a semi-clothed bronze variant of Napoleon featuring a cross belt and military ornaments to Napoleon's chest (as opposed to the usual plain handling of this particular portrait) and this mirrors but is not a complete copy of a fully modelled plaster bust of Napoleon, raised on a socle base also featuring a crossed belt and military ornaments by Chaudet (albeit with a different handling of the face and features) from the turn of the 19th century. This distinctive belt and ornaments were also subsequently added to later Sevres biscuit porcelain cast busts of Napoleon on their herm bases dating from circa 1811 onwards dating the manufacture of this bronze bust to no earlier than 1812.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue.
