After Sir Peter LelyPortrait of Charles Stewart, 3rd Duke of Richmond, bust length, in the robes of the Order of the Garteroil on canvas, painted oval76 x 64cmCondition report: The portrait is executed in oil on a linen support which has been lined. The canvas tension is good. There is a deformation along the lower edge caused by debris trapped between the canvas and lower stretcher bar, otherwise, the canvas is in plane. The paint layer is in a good, stable condition overall with localised areas of slightly raised age cracks. There is some overpaint in the lower half of the painting but the extent of this is difficult to determine below the varnish layer. The varnish has yellowed but is generally even and semi-matte. There is a thick layer of surface dirt across the front and reverse of the painting and frame.

There are localised areas of slightly raised cracks in the sitter’s face and a deep scratch running vertically through the right hand side. Areas of impasto appear to have been slightly softened during the lining process. Overall the paint layer is in a good condition. The varnish is very degraded, it has yellowed and become dull with age and no longer saturating the darker paint passages. There is a thick layer of dust and dirt present on the front and reverse.
English School, mid-18th century Portrait of a lady, bust length, in a blue and white lace-trimmed dress, matching choker, pink jacket and diamond earrings oil on canvas 35 x 44.5cmCondition report: Relined. Craquelure throughout. The paint is a little thin on the neck/chest. Some scuffs and the occasional small flake of paint loss in the background. Old stretcher imprints are slightly visible. Seen under UV light, the bloom of the varnish makes it difficult to tell, but there appear to be large areas of overpainting in the background, and the face gently flouresces so we believe this has been retouched in the past. The overpainting in the left hand part of the background could cover an old repaired tear. A little dirty. The varnish is thick and glossy. The dimensions of the frame are 53 x 46cm. The dimensions of the canvas are 35 x 44.5cm
