‡A VERY FINE EAST EUROPEAN GEM-SET, ENAMELLED AND SILVER-GILT MOUNTED SABRE OF EXHIBITION QUALITY, MID-19TH CENTURY, PROBABLY HUNGARY in the Turkish taste, with curved single-edged blade of watered steel double-edged towards the point, etched and gilt with trophies-of-arms, flowers, foliage, a Turkish bust, celestial motifs and a sun-in-splendour (areas of wear), silver-gilt hilt chased with panels of scrolling foliage and flowers on a finely punched ground, retaining some early polychrome enamel (losses), comprising a pair of langets (the inner slightly bent), quillons with swelling shaped terminals, and faceted grip rising to an angular pommel, the outer face profusely studded with rubies, emerald and garnets in raised settings (some replaced), in its wooden scabbard with later purple velvet covering, with large silver-gilt locket, chape and three broad middle bands all decorated with gemstones en suite with the hilt (minor restorations), and retaining some early polychrome enamel throughout, the middle band and locket each fitted with a fixed loop for suspension, in a later lined and fitted case by Asprey & Co 74.8 cm; 29 1/2 in blade
