France, Bourbon dynasty, Order of the Lily, a reduced size 47mm including crown suspension x 28mm scarce star shaped variant of the Order of the Lily in silver and enamel with gold centre, the obverse blue enamelled circlet surrounding the bust of the restored monarch Louis XVIII, reading ‘Fidelite Devouement’ and the reverse with the central device of the Fleur de Lys, and circlet with the dates ‘12 Avril, 3 Mai 1814, 19 Mars, 8 Juillet 1815’, and suspended from ring with Fleur de Lys below crown, chipping to obverse blue enamel, but overall very fine and scarce £200-£240 --- Sold with an original hand written letter in French, from the Surgeon Major of the 15th Regiment of Infantry stating that the Chef de Battalion, Guillaume Langlois, commanding officer and holder of the Legion d’Honneur, was suffering from illness and dysentery, and requesting leave to recuperate, dated 15 October 1808. A Napoleonic ‘sick note’.

She married John H Arkwright in 1866 and bore one son (Jack) and three daughters (Geraldine, Evelyn and Olive). Beyond the domestic sphere, she undertook responsibilities for the schools on the Hampton Court estate, and worked for the inmates of the Hampton Homes (almshouses established by the family on the estate) and of the Coningsby Hospital (for retired servicemen) in Hereford. She also provided nurses for the poor, established clothing clubs, and was Secretary to the Herefordshire General Hospital penny scheme. She led choir practices for the local church. 'On account of her own graces, amiability, goodness and many accomplishments,' noted the Hereford Times, 'Mrs Arkwright was dearly beloved by all classes in the county.'With thanks to Catherine Beale for her historical guidance and research on this lot.Lawrence MacDonald was born in Perthshire in 1799 and was apprenticed to a local mason called Thomas Gibson before moving to Edinburgh and then to Rome, becoming one of the founding members of the British Academy of Arts there. He remained in Rome from 1831 to 1878 where he worked continuously on portrait busts for the wealthy; many in the Classical style. His son, Alexander, followed in his father's footsteps and worked alongside him in his workshop. The following Lot 6 of John Hungerford was carved in the same year by his son. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, London, and at the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh. Educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford (graduated 1856), he inherited the Hampton Court estate, Herefordshire (10,250 acres) from his father in February 1858 (his mother wrote 'you are early called to the 'battle of life' with more than usual cares & responsibilities'). A man of immense energy, Johnny threw himself into estate and county affairs. His father having renovated the house itself, Johnny entered into the spirit of mid-century 'model farming' borrowing heavily to enlarge the estate to 10,500 acres and to undertake the improvement of his farms, particularly sub-soil drainage. From 1859 he began to show the pedigree herd of Hereford Cattle founded by his father in 1819, winning over 330 prizes nationally, and co-founded the Hereford Herd Book Society. He sat on the Council of the Royal Agricultural Society of England and was made Vice-President in 1898 ('for age, not merit or intellect,' he wrote to his wife). He was also Joint Master of the North Herefordshire Hunt, and founder of the Herefordshire Philharmonic Society (see Lot 99), as well as Chairman of the Stewards of Hereford's Three Choirs Festival. He enjoyed fishing, shooting and cricket and was a noted horticulturalist. He served as Chief Steward of Leominster, County Councillor and Alderman, High Sheriff of Herefordshire in 1862, and as Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire 1902-1904. He was remembered by a contemporary as 'the epitome of the English squire'.Johnny married in 1866 Lucy Davenport of Foxley, Herefordshire. They went to Italy on a honeymoon tour in 1868, when this bust was carved. A late 18th century King George III .925 silver shilling having the bust of George III facing right with the inscription reading: GEORGIUS III DEI GRATIA to the obverse, the reverse having the cruciform shields with the legend reading M B F ET A REX F D B ET L D S R I A T E T E. Dated 1787. It measures 2.4cm in diameter & weighs 7.3g.
A mid 18th century King George II .925 silver shilling coin with the obverse having the older King's portrait engraved by John Tanner, with the 'LIMA' mark at the base of the portrait, and the reverse showing the four crowned shields bearing the coat of arms of the Duchy of Brunswick and Luneburg, France, Scotland and England, and Ireland. Dated 1745. The coin measures 3.2cm in diameter & weighs 15.1g.Featured is a shilling of George II This particular example of a George II old head Shilling is a "Lima" issue. Lima coins of George II are some of the more sought-after pieces amongst collectors of British coinage. They were minted in 1745-46 using a large hoard of silver captured from the Spanish by Admiral Anson's squadron operating in the Pacific Ocean. The word "Lima" engraved under the bust is a reference to the fact that the Spanish silver was being shipped from Lima back to Spain when it was intercepted by Anson.
An early 19th century King George IIII, 1821, 22ct gold circulated sovereign coin. The obverse having the King’s bust to the left, laureate, tie with loop at two ends, hair short and bare neck. B.P. in small letters below truncation standing for Benedetto Pistrucci. The reverse having St. George slaying the Dragon. The date is shown below the exergue line with the letters B.P. to the right for Benedetto Pistrucci. It measures 22.05mm in diameter & weighs 7.98gms.
An early 18th century Queen Anne .925 silver half crown with the observe bearing the draped bust of Queen Anne with the inscription ANNA DEI GRATIA, and the reverse having the shield reverse with four crowned shields with the inscription REG MAG BRI FR ET HIB. Dated 1708. The coin weighs 14.3g & measuring 3cm in diameter.
