GOLD AND TURQUOISE MEDALLION RING, CIRCA 1820The bezel designed as an oval compartment, the lid depicting the bust of Louis Antoine de Bourbon, Duke of Angoulême, (1775-1844) facing left and wearing a laurel wreath, inscribed L'Espagne le bénit, L'Europe l'admire (Spain blesses him, Europe admires him), in the border, the surround set with turquoise and cannetille detail, between shoulders designed as tri-coloured trophies of war, the compartment opening to reveal the words Réveil de la Gloire Française (Awakening of French glory), on the reverse of the lid, mounted in gold, some damage, ring size approx. SFootnotes:Louis Antoine de Bourbon, Duke of Angoulême, (1775-1844), was the elder son of King Charles X of France. He served King Louis XVIII after Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo. In 1823, he commanded the French army at the Battle of Trocadero, restoring the rule of King Ferdinand VII of Spain and was awarded the title Prince of Trocadero. From 1824 as heir apparent to the French throne, he supported his father's policy of purging France of her recent revolutionary and imperial past.
