19th-early 20th century AD. A carved crystal bust of the Roman Emperor Constantine with short tousled hair, large eyes, small pursed mouth, toga to the left shoulder over a cuirass with prominent cross emblem; mounted on a custom-made stand. 674 grams, 15cm including stand (6"). Ex Silk collection, London, UK; formed in the 1950s. The Emperor Constantine (Flavius Valerius Aurelius Constantinus Augustus"). was born in 272 AD at Naissus (modern Niš, Serbia), the son of Flavius Valerius Constantius, a Roman army officer who became the western Emperor in 293 AD. Constantine served in the military in the east and was appointed to the rank of tribune. In 305, Constantius was raised to the rank of Augustus, the senior western emperor, and Constantine was recalled to campaign under his father in Britannia. He was elected emperor by the army at York on his father's death in 306 AD. Constantine won a series of civil wars against the emperors Maxentius and Licinius to become sole ruler of both west and east by 324 AD. He is revered as the first Christian Emperor of Rome, and his mother, Helena, was believed to have undertaken a pilgrimage to Palestine to discover the cross on which Jesus was crucified. In the Orthodox church, he is regarded as a saint. Constantine pursued military campaigns against the tribes on the Roman frontiers and regained some territories abandoned by his predecessors during the previous century. He built a new imperial palace at Byzantium and renamed it Constantinople after himself, which later became the capital of the Empire for over one thousand years. Thus the Eastern Roman Empire is known as the Byzantine Empire. Fine condition; old mounting holes to the shoulders. [No Reserve]

A bronze weight, hexagonal in plan with silver-inlaid cross to one broad face, incised nimbate bust to the other with cross motifs on the tunic, silver-inlaid face with beard. 32 grams, 21mm (3/4"). A group of stamp seals consisting of a banded agate engraved with a human-headed and winged bull; a carnelian stirrup-shaped seal, body carved with scrolling pattern, underside engraved with a mouse, two flowers in front, Parsi script to the edge; a carnelian stirrup-shaped seal, body engraved with scrolling pattern, underside engraved with a scorpion; a banded agate dome-shaped seal engraved with bust of a bearded male, Parsi script to the edge; a quartz dome-shaped seal engraved with a standing cockerel; dome-shaped stone seal engraved with a standing gryphon with standard in front, Parsi script to the edge; an amethyst dome-shaped seal, underside engraved with a walking lion. 19.86 grams total, 10-21mm (3/4"). Awarded to graduates of the Moscow Practical Academy of Commercial Sciences; graduates also gained the hereditary title of honorary citizen. Extremely fine.
51 AD. Uncertain Thracian mint. Obv: TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG F BRITANNICVS legend with bare-headed, draped bust left. Rev: Mars advancing left, holding spear and shield; S - C at sides. 27.12 grams. RIC p.130 note; BMC Claudius 226/Titus 306; Sear 1908. Originally named Germanicus after his uncle, the name of this son of Claudius was soon changed in celebration of the invasion of Britain; he fell out of favour after the execution of Messalina and died, aged 14, in 55 AD, soon after the accession of Nero and most likely by poison. 19th century AD. After Dassier, lead-alloy cast. Obv: three quarter bust with bonnet and mantle and HENRICUS VIII D G ANG FR ET HIB REX legend followed by small ID designer initials. Rev: a monument with a relief of Hercules demolishing an altar, with papal tiara and keys lying thereon and a fire behind, with Hymen lamenting before, holding a burning torch, with five others extinguished around her and NAT 1491 COR 24 IUN / 1509 MORT 28 IAN / 1547 legend in three lines in exergue. 31.71 grams, 41mm. The reverse of the medal shows six torches, five of which are extinguished, to symbolise the six wives of Henry VIII and the one marriage surviving the death of Henry; the breaking of the altar and Papal symbols represent the break with the Church of Rome and the fire behind the altar symbolises the flames to which Henry consigned those who did not acknowledge his supremacy; the originals of this medal are recorded in silver and bronze. Karl Gustaf Hjalmar Armfeldt (1873-1959"). was a silversmith born in Finland; in 1886 he was apprenticed to the Finnish silversmith Paul Sohlman in St. Petersburg and, becoming a journeyman in 1891, he was a Fabergé workmaster from 1895; he used the personal hallmark '??' and produced objects for Fabergé until 1916. The Fabergé workshop, under Carl Fabergé, became famous for Imperial jewels and objects of vertu, much patronised by the Tsar and Russian nobility. Very fine condition.
