Provenance: Count Emeryk Hutten Czapski (1897-1979), grandson of the celebrated collector, numismatist and historian of the same name; thence by descent.

A French Art Nouveau patinated bronze and mother of pearl letter opener, circa 1900. the handle formed as a medallion with a cast profile bust of a lady depictive of the elements, one facing a flaming volcano the other exhaling air with a dove in the background, all supported on an Art Nouveau stylised iris and leaf stem in tones of green and reddy brown, with mother of pearl blade, the metalwork with co-joined monogram "HB". Length 16.4 cm (see illustration).
