A Parian bust of the water nymph Clytie, the bottom edge of the bust bordered with a circle of leaves, on a socle base, approx. 25cm highNote: This bust is modelled after the Roman marble bust of Clytie, which was one of the most celebrated of the classical sculptures that entered the British Museum with the collection of Charles Townley in 1805. It was much copied in Rome in the late eighteenth century, before it was brought to London, and throughout the nineteenth century. Townley acquired it from the family of the Prince Laurenzano in Naples during his extended second Grand Tour of Italy (1771–1774). It was first referred to as Agrippina, it is now accepted as Clytie.Clytie was a water nymph, the daughter of Oceanus and Tethys in Greek mythology. She loved Helios, who spurned her.
